Lowell Mellett .» 'On the Other Hand’ America’s Business Blue Bloods Deny Charge That They’re Reds This piece probably comes under the head of .whistling into the wind. It is intended to deplore the practice of shouting, “Communist!" at anybody who disagrees with you or at anybody who suggests changing anything that happens to suit you. It is not a very intelligent practice. Being used to attack all sorts of reasonable proposals, it may eventually win friends for com munism. The uninformed citizen" may begin to think, “If that’s com munism, communism may not be so bad!” ' But the shriek ers keep it up. Just as we used to say that'pa triotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, we now can say that the cry of communism is the first refuge of any person Who has no ar gument. An ex ample was of fered this week In the Senate ✓ Committee con- toweii Meiwtt. sidering the nomination of Gordon ft. Clapp to be chairman of the TVA board. Senator McKellar, making little progress in his oppo sition to Mr. Clapp, started tossing the epithet about so widely that he eventually included former Sen ator James Pope of Idaho, one of the TV A directors, among his Red suspects. Attacks Reach Climax. This from Mr. McKellar, who owes his seat in the Senate to the to talitarian political regime of Boss Crump, was odd enough, but some thing still stranger occurred the same day. The Committee for Eco nomic Development found it neces sary to put out a new statement of its principles and purposes to offset a series of attacks. These attacks had reached a climax in the assertion of a Wall Street financial publication that the CED was "com munistic and wanted to nationalize the. banking system.” The CED had ignored previous misrepresentations, such as those emanating from Marwin K. Hart’s National Economic Council, the out fit that finance the weird and won derful broadcasts of Upton Close on one of the national networks. But now CED felt it was being stabbed in the house of its friends and it made reply. To know wlTat the CED is you need only to know who it is. It was organized and is still headed by Paul G. Hoffman, president of the Studebaker Corp. Chairman of its Information Committee is Walter D. Puller, publisher of the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies’ Home Journal. Chairman of its Research and Policy Committee is Raymond Rubicam of the Young & Rubicam advertising agancy, who succeeded Ralph E. Flanders, the new Senator from Vermont. Other “Blue Bloods." Other blue bloods of American business who have been active in the work of the CED are such “Reds’’ as Eric Johnston, former president of the United States Chamber of Commerce and now czar of the motion picture industry; Fowler McCormick, president of the International Harvester Co.; Beards ley Ruml, treasurer of R. H. Macy & Co. Energetic promoter of the organization, when it was being formed in the war days to meet postwar business conditions, was the ubiquitous Bill Benton, now Assist ant Secretary of State. Mr. Benton’s present preoccupation is the beam ing of short-wave broadcasts to Rus sia, not exactly extolling the vir tues of democracy but calculated to give Russian listeners the impres sion that our system of government is eminently satisfactory to us. This is the sinister group accused Of being communistic. Why? Be cause it recently urged that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. undertake to guarantee all bank1 deposits, instead of deposits of *5,000 or less. .Nevertheless, «o potent has the charge of communism become, that the CED—like the Union for Demo cratic Action, for example—feels it necessary to protest its purity. “We in the CED,” says its statement, “believe in a free competitive capi talistic economy. We are opposed to any measures which are a threat to its continuance or development,” etc., etc., etc. The language has be come familiar. When will our celebrated Ameri can sense of humor come back from wherever it has gone?
