Work on Program for

A subcommittee to plan Washing
ton's program for "I Am an Amer
ican Day, May ie, started work
today under the chairmanship of
Pol Waldron E. Leonard, director
0f the District Veterans Service
Center.
Col. Leonard was selected for
the p°st at 411 organization meet
ing yesterday of the 1947 "I Am an
American Day" Committee by Her
bert Jacobi, committee chairman.
Mr. Jacobi was elected chairman
,t the meeting.
The program subcommittee is to
work up a tentative plan for cere
monies at the Monument Grounds
and submit it to the full Committee
gt its next meeting April 13.
Many Ideas Offered.
A number of ideas expressed at
yesterday's meeting will be con
sidered by the subcommittee. It
was suggested the program start
about 3 pjn. and feature service
bands, recitation of the pledge of
,llegiance, a massing of the colors
by patriotic organizations. Boy and
Girl Scouts as ushers, a celebrity
from the screen or radio world, a
ipeech by a prominent person,
marching by the high school cadet
corps, prayers by leading clergymen
and singing of patriotic songs.
Other suggestions were the selec
tion of an "All-American" District
boy and girl to interest 'teen-agers
in attending and emphasis of the

Tenure of Chairman.
The committee decided the chair
man elected each year for the cele
bration would remain as chairman
until the opening meeting held for
the next year's program.
"I Am an American Day" was set
by presidential proclamation on
March 1. The District Commission
ers followed with their own procla
mation on March 27.

native-born Americans who come
of voting age each year, as well as
Immigrants who have qualified for
citizenship.
Citizens Council Extends
Photo Contest Deadline
The deadline for entries in the
photo contest sponsored by the Citi
zens Council for Community Plan
ning has been extended one week,
it was announced today.
Entries received by 1 p.m. Monday

will be made next Tuesday giving the
time and place of the exhibition of
entries and the date on which prize

one day, wait three full days and
receive the license on the fifth
