Menacing Ice Cliff Still Stands

t (NANA).—For the last twc
weeks we have been unloading the
Port of Beaumont as she lay at
anchor in Marguerite Bay. Oui
small boats have been ferrying sup
plies ashore, wending a wary way
past a huge overhanging cliff ol
ice which Juts out over the water
from a glacier moving into the sea
Since this steep ice shelf is only
600 feet from our camp site and
towers 100 feet in the air, our boat
crews have kept a nervous ear
cocked for sounds of its imminent
collapse. Fairly constant creakings
and groanings within the mass did
not seem to change its stability, so
the crews keDt on workine. thoueh
iand ice flew In the air, the eartt
! rumbled, and great thunderou!
roarings echoed and re-echoec

A detail consisting of* Chief En
giner Charles Hassage and Pilots
Charles Adams and James Lassiter
decided to blast in an attempt to
remove the menacing ice mass. They
lowered eight charges, of TNT into
the deptc of the crevasse and con
nected wires to the impluse box.
The results, to put it mildly, were
spectacular. Buildings shook, snow
