* _ After Dark The Movie* Don’t Do Right By Muflie and It* Maker* By HARRY MacARTHUR > I ' - ~ If Hollywood doesn’t care whethei or not it alienates a lot of potential customers, it can go right along as 11 has been going. If it would like tc keep the musicians of the land among its happy ticket-buyers though, it had better change some of its ways. It never had occurred to us that things were so serious until the other night, when we sat talking with Sammy Seymour, Hugh Barteman and Nini Baker, at the Roger Smith Hotel’s Cafe Caprice “Can’t you do something about the movies?” Hugh wanted to know We told him Hollywood had been going along for years not taking oui excellent advice and it was not likely to change suddenly on this score. “Well, some one ought to do some thing,” he went on. “Radio is bad enough. You can’t turn on the radic without hearing some would-be comic tell the boys to put down theii Racing Forms, to play the notes in stead of the handicapper’s odds But the movies are really bad. They’re always drinking, they don’t have any homes and nobody treats them with respect." “Yeah," Mr! Seymour cut in, “I saw a movie the other day. Fellow and a girl were sitting at a bar talk ing. Way off in the background, not bothering anybody, was a piano player, playing softly. The girl complained that the music bothered her, so the man turned and growled, ‘Hey, you with the hands. Go home!’ He can’t even say, *Hey, fellah.’ He’s got to say, ‘Hey, you with the hands.’ No respect at all for musicians. “What really gets me,” Sammy went on, “is the way they handle big musical scenes in pictures. The girl walks into some big, swanky night club and tells the boss she’s a singer, she wants a Job. ‘You’re a singer, huh?’ he says. ‘Okay, let’s hear ya. Go up there and sing.’ So she goes up to the bandstand and sings. She doesn’t say a word to the leader, but he’s got a special arrangement all ready for her. If you want musicians to be your friends, stop mairing them all look like buns and stop making musical sequences look so silly to them. % * * * Miss Sue Milroy, the pretty girl who has been doing her singing most recently at Sacha Bucas’ Coral Club, may be doing it soon at (me of those intimate East Side rendez vous in New York. The deal is in the on-the-flre stfcge now. * * * * Many have voiced the wish that more “name band" music was avail able in Washington, without doing anything more than wishing. John P. Hoberman of the Washington Aviation Country Club, out Bethesda way, is doing something about it. Specifically, he has dedicated the club to a “name band” policy, which gets under way Thursday night when Carmen Cavallero, the young man known as the “Poet of the Piano,'’ brings his orchestra down for a one night engagement. Mr. Cavallero will be followed on Friday and Satur day nights by another band of some rrnoWn, the one conducted by Richard Himber. Mr. Hoberman, right now, has plans for presenting “name bands” three nights a week only. Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week (April 17* 18 and 19) the music will be provided by Sammy Kaye, the “Swing and Sway” man. Follow ing Mr. Kaye, things aren’t definite yet, but the tentative list includes Vaughn Monroe, Harry James, Ted Weems, Gene Krupa, Louis Prima and Glen Gray. As plans go, Mr. Hoberman’s are impressive ones. * * * * Future Bookings: Jan Murray of the New York cafes and Sid Caesar, of the movies, at Paul Young’s Romany Room. (Mr. Murray’s “fu ture booking" might or might not be tonight: Mr. Young’s phone seemed to be ringing when we tried to check, but he didn’t seem to be answer ing.) * * * * ■ New arrival: Martha Raye, as you probably have been made aware, opened last night at Sam Schanker s Club Cairo, something which Mr. S. regards as “the biggest event in Washington night club history.” Others in the show: Bill Baird, Ben Yost’s Royal Guards and Clarissa. More of all this later. ADVERTISEMENT. A Appeals Court Roles For Teacher in Fight Over Wage Increase The United States Court of Ap peals yesterday held that Paul Cooke, a teacher at the Miner Teach ers’ College, retained his status as a permanent teacher in the public school system while on leave of ab sence to teach in a civilian capacity to a Maryland Army camp. The appellate court held that Mr. Cooke Is entitled to the regular $100 yearly salary increase provided by aw for District school teachers. The ruling reversed a District Court de rision. Mr. Cooke received no salary from he School Board while on leave, it pas said. The appellate court held It was unable to agree with the con tention of the Board of Education hat the automatic increase “con notes active employment upon a pay status in the public school system m the date (July 1) on which the salary increase is to take effect.” On his score the appellate court opto Venetian Blinds CUSTOM MADE Enclosed Metal Head or beautiful facia trim.
