Courage Needed to Write Story,
Paul Gallico Tells Group Here
II 4V.• I nnHiinn miict the vAAifor.
depth, or breadth to write a story,
because they are full of inhibitions
and afraid to let themselves go.
This was the opinion expressed
last night by Paul Galileo, magazine
writer and author of “Confessions of
a Story Writer,” speaking to mem
bers and guests of the Professional
Writers’ Club at their 11th an
niversary celebration.
“Good writers must have a burning
something to say and the will and
discipline to say It,” he asserted.
Mr. Galiico warned his audience
the short story is the most difficult
of all writing, because It requires
the most skill and concentration.
The writer pointed out the tough
est part of writing a story is its
preparation.
“The mind rebels against think
ing,” he declared. “When I sit
down to write, I’m ready to do it
right the first time.”
"If you’re not completely familiar
with the plot, setting and characters
you can’t put it down on paper.”
* The speaker explained good fiction
"Pick up a large canvas and slash
bright paint on it,” he urged. "Write
about large human emotions—love,
hate, greed, jealousy. Throw away
those minatures, get a large canvas
and go to work.”
Mr. Galileo maintained that If
the author can^ feel the story is the
greatest ever written, It is no good.
"All stories become a bit fragrant
after they come out of the type
writer,” he asserted. "Put a clothes
pin on your nose and keep writing."
Miss Ruth Crane, director of the
“Modem Woman” program on Sta
tion WMAL introduced Mr. Gallico
to the group.
Founders and past presidents of
the club, as well as several honorary
members spoke briefly.
A musical program was presented
by the Chansonette Sextet, directed
by Mrs, Lucia Maxwell MoQueary,
and the Takoma String Trio. Mias
Frances Pox, president of tha club,
presided
The affair was held in the YWCA,
Seventeenth and K streets N.W.
