today was in Washington, complet
ing final plans to leave for Europe
next week.
She said she had planned the tour

Most Plane Passengers Prefer.
Riding Backward, ATC Learns
By William H. Shippen, Jr.
Aviation Editor of Tho Star
An extensive experiment com
pleted here yesterday by the Air
Transport Command reveals that
an overwhelming majority of pas
sengers would rather ride backward
than-forward in airplanes.
Since October, an ATC Skymaster
on the tri-weekly "Statesman" run
to Fairfield, Calif., has been trans
porting passengers in reversed seats.
Of mqre than 1,000 who made the
transcontinental flight, 94 per cent
voted for the safety, convenience
and comfort of flying backwards.
This result was obtained, however,
in a modem transport on which
the tricycle landing gear keeps the
plane on a level position on the
ground. Passengers might find
backward-facing seats uncomfort
able in older-model planes, in which
cabins slant upward toward the
nose while on the ground.
When the goal of 1,000 passengers
was passed, the Pacific Division of

the ATC, which operates tne route,
was Instructed to return the seats
to normal position, while results of
the test are under consideration.
The method so far has been neither
approved nor rejected for future
ATC operations, it was said.
ATC traffic officers and passengers
agreed there is almost no noticeable
change in flying backward, except
in take-offs and landings. The
project was based on a survey of
opinions of AAF flight surgeons
and an analysis of accident reports.
Both sources revealed the human
body, if properly supported, could
withstand the decelerative shock of
many crash landings.
Reversed seats seemed a logical
solution to ATC officers, who have
seen to the safety and welfare of
4,600,000 passengers in the last four
years.
The Air Materiel Command now
Is conducting experiments on the
reaction of the human body to
