Points for Parents ~By EDVTH Thomas Wallace
Planning for a small child to have a young guest while mother
has adult ones prevents his feeling he is an outsider and, as a
result, demanding attention in undesirable ways.
This : Not This
Mother—We’ll put a flower on
your little table, too, and after you
and Edna have had your lunch you
can play dolls while we women play
bridge.
Mother—If you touch those cards
again I’m going to whip you! Please,
noney, be a good little girl and go
and play with some of your toys.

Opening lead, queen of clubs.
When declarer has a choice of two
or more ways to play a hand ha
should calculate which of the avail
able methods offers the greater
probability of success. If one method
appears to be superior it should be
selected, however small may be the
margin of superiority. This is mere
ly following the principle of per
centages. If, however, declared is
in a position to so arrange his se
quence of plays that he may try one
and if that fails, still have a chance
at the other, the proper procedure
is too obvious to require comment.
In today’s hand South became de
clarer at a contract of six spades, 4
reasonable contract. When North
was able to bid both red suits and
support spades, South felt that since
he himself had the equivalent of an
opening bid, there was a bright
chance for slam and that a contract
of five would surely be safe, if North
declined the invitation. North was
w-illing to go on to slam but pre
ferred to play at no trump if South's
hand was suited for the purpose.
South, however, holding an unbal
anced hand, elected to go on in
spades.
The queen of clubs was led and
taken by the ace. A low spade to
the king held the trick and the
spade return was taken by West,
who continued with the jack of
clubs. Declarer was faced with the
choice of taking the heart finesse or
the diamond finesse. If the queen
of hearts is favorably located de
clarer will have two discards of dia
mnnris nnp on thp hpnrt and nna nn
the king of clubs. If he chooses to
take the diamond finesse the odd
heart can be discarded on the king
of clubs.
On the surface this is an out and
out guess, because each finesse has
a 50 per cent chance of success. De
clarer, quite properly, did not put
up the king of clubs at this point,
but ruffed in order to be in his own
hand for the drawing of the last
trump. He then decided to play
East for the king of diamonds, since
West has shown up with the ace of
spades. This play failed as can be
seen. Had he elected to take the
heart finesse he would have met with
similar failure.
The proper play is to give one’s
self two chances instead of only a
50-50 chance. Declarer should first j
play the ace and king of hearts on '
the off chance that the queen will
fall. If it does his troubles are over.
If, however, the queen fails to ap
pear, declarer still has the even
chance that the king of diamonds
can be finessed. Two chances mast
be better than one.

MANIOC.
IManioc ecsulenta.)
By Lillian Cox Athey
Manioc is a tuberous root known
in some countries as cassava. It is
an important food of millions of
people in the tropical countries of
the world, though practically un
known to the inhabitants of tem
perate zones by its true name.
Manioc when processed is very well
known to millions of housekeepers.
In the United States it is tapiota
served in desserts. Industrially, in
flour it has many uses. Other fin
ished products are dried slices, flour,
meal and compressed residue used in
Europe for stock. The slices are
made into many types of starches.
Manioc flour is in demand for
crackers arfti biscuits which are
easily digsted. Cassava or manioc
is now grown in our Southern States
as food for cattle. In Brazil the dis
tilleries make alcohol of it.
The roots contain a glucoside
which is toxic and may be deadly if
eaten raw. This toxic material is
removed by heating and pressing
out the juice. This bitter juice Is
known as cassareep, much used in
condiments and sauces. Sweet manioc
may be boiled as a vegetable, the
flour used in thick native drinks.
In Brazil the greatest concentra
tion of cultivated and wild species
gives rise to the opinion that the
plant had its origin in this country.
Cultivation has been since prehis
toric times. Upon their arrival in
the New World the Spaniards found
several edible varieties under culti
vation on the Caribbean Islands as
well as on the mainland from Mexico
to Uruguay on the eastern seaboard
to Peru on the west.
During the seventh century manioc
was planted in South China, Malaya
Bind the East Indies. Before this it
was carried to many other lands by
Portuguese traders who took it along
ns food stuff on their long voyages to
india and it is believed that thi
accounts for its presence in Asia.
