A descendant of John Bigelow, who came to this country around the middle of the 17th century, Mrs. Sears was a native of Waukon, Iowa, where her parents, one of Iowa’s pioneer families, had lived for many years before she was bom. Shs was the widow of William Goff Sears, who was a descendant of Judge William Goff, one of the men who condemned King Charles I of England to death. During the reign of Charles’ II,, Mr. Goff es caped to America and, according to family tradition, was the leader of a group of settlers who success fully repelled an Indian attack on the town of Hadley, Mass., around 1700 Mr. sears, who died about 20 years ago, was a pioneer railroad builder in Vermont, and later was associated with a cotton trading firm. Mrs. Sears was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolu tion, the Daughters of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Dames of the Magna Carta and the Daugh ters of 1812. McMahon, New York Post corre spondent whose press credentials were lifted by the Spanish govern ment, said on his arrival at La Guardia Field yesterday that he felt he had just left “one of the largest prisons in the world." A State Department protest in his behalf to the Foreign Ministry last week was unsuccessful. Mr. McMahon described Franco Spain as "a prison housing 25,000, 000 people, some of the finest people 1 have ever met,” and said “the vast majority of people are against the Franco regime.” He said his difficulty with the government arose from one of his dispatches quoting an attack by a Falange (official Franco Party) uni versity newspaper’s attack on For eign Minister Martin Artajo, charg ing him with engaging in “shady deals.” The writer said the dis patch was intercepted and nev$r reached the Post. Mr. McMahon said Artajo charged him with prejudice and said his articles “had consistenely shown unmeasured hostility against the Franco regime.” “There is no press freedom for foreign correspondents in Spain. They are making an attempt to tell the world there is, but I fear that guided by the expesience of a few correspondents in the past year, there is no basis for the assertion that the foreign press enjoys free darn in Spain,” the correspondent said. Mrs. Annie Owen, 89, Dies; District Resident 40 Yean Mrs. Annie R. C. Owen, 89, widow of Col. William Otway Owen, died yesterday at a nursing home at 805 Maple avenue, Takoma Park, Md., after a long illness. A native of Lynchburg, Va„ Mrs. Owen bad lived in Washington about 40 years. Her husband, who was stationed at the Army Medical Mu seum during World War I, died in 1934. Mrs. Owen was a member of the Army-Navy Chapter of the Daugh ters of the American Revolution, the Jefferson Davis flhapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Colonial Dames, the Society of Vir ginia Antiquities and the Church of the Epiphany. Jackson Davis, 65, Dies; Education Board Officer By ft\« Associated Press ^ CARTERSVILLE, Va., April 16.— Jackson Davis, 65, vice president and director of the General Education Board, New York City, died at his home yesterday. Connected with the board since 1915. Dr. Davis specialized in South ern Education, interracial problems and education in Africa. The board, endowed by the late John D. Rockefeller to promote "education within the United States,” has in recent years con centrated its program on education in the Southern States. Mr. Davis was president of the Phelps-Stokes Fund, president of the New York State Colonization So ciety, president of the Board of Trustees of the Booker T. Wash ington Institute of Liberia and Car negie visitor to Africa in 1935. Tennessee Loses Last Confederate Veteran ly th» Auociattd Pr»«» LEBANON, Tenn., April 16.—Ten nessee's last surviving Confederate veteran died yesterday. Death came to James Lemuel Barry at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Seagraves, where he had been ill for three weeks. Last February 11 he celebrated his 100th birthday anniversary. His four generations of survivors Include three daughters, one son, three step-children, 37 grandchil dren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. In September, 1863, at the age of 16, young Barry ran away from his home at Nashville and walked 30 miles to Lebanon to Join Company F of the 4th Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army. $600 Reward Offered for Girl's Attacker . Rewards totaling $900 ham been offered so far for information lead ing to the arrest and conviction of the attacker of a 16-year-old Che on Hill (Md.) girl near her home nine days ago. The latest offer—from the Prince Georges County commissioners—la for $500. The reward was author ized yesterday at the request of County Police Supt. Ralph W. Brown. Previously; members of the county-police association had vol unteered a $100 reward.
