Mr. Norman who represented the Third Con gressional Dis trict of Wash ington, died ii his sleep. Tim cause of deatl was not imme diately known although he ha< been undei treatment by thi House physiciai i or inuigesuon, — — — friends said. Mr. Norman. His body was discovered this morning by Ployd Curtis, with whom he lived. He was pronounced dead by Dr. Herbert Brandes of Casualty Hospital, who arrived after Mr. Curtis summoned aid. An active worker in behalf of farm legislation in the State Legislature, he had been a member of the West Union (Wash.) Grange for 27 years. Sponsored Conservation Measure. While serving his first term in Congress, Mr. Norman sponsored legislation for conservation of nat ural resources and for the fullest use of forests. In the present session he was a member of Public Works Committee and the Subcommittees on Rivers and Harbors and Roads. The Washington Representative usually spent 15 hours a day at the Capitol, and often was in his office most of the week end, friends said. He was a member of the Elks, the Eagles, the Odd Fellows and Re bekah fraternal orders. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice Derry Norman; a son, Howard A. J., April 18.—E. Arthur Ball, 52, manufacturer and flying enthusiast, formerly of Mun-. cie, Ind., was found dead in his au tomobile yesterday at the Millville airport, Police Sergt. George H. Quinn reported. Death was caused by a heart at tack Wednesday, Cumberland County Coroner Richard Zimmerman said. Mr. Ball, a relative of the Ball glass manufacturing family of Muncie, purchased the Millville glass manufacturing plant early this year. The plant produces battery separa tors, pill bottles, vials, glass nov elties, etc. Daughter Disappeared Last Year. One of his daughters, Dorothy Ball, disappeared a year ago from Mount Holyoke College at South Hadley, Mass. She was found later In a Salvation Army center in the Lower East Side of New York. Miss Ball, totally deaf, said she left col lege "on a sudden impulse” because she was "under a strain.” Besides Dorothy, he is survived by another daughter, Barbara, and a son. He lived at 1000 Fairmont street N.W. A native of Amherst Va„ Mr. Rose was a friend of hundreds of promi nent figures in the Capital and the Nation. During his tenure at Har vey’s he had served Buffalo Bill Cody, Mark Twain, President Theo dore Roosevelt, Clarence Darrow and Gen. George Goethals, accord ing to Julius Lulley, owner of the restaurant. Mr. Lulley said that “Daddy” Rose was Diamond Jim Brady’s favorite Washington waiter and the white haired retainer often had served Franklin D. Roosevelt when he was Assistant Secretary of the Navy. “Ever since the news of his death, old patrons have been stopping by and leaving money for flowers for his funeral,” Mr. Lulley asserted. Mr. Green, who waa credited with introducing the eight-hour day to' Detroit, startled industrial circles at the turn ol the century with his management of the huge Solvay Co. plant In Delray, Mich. A native of Syracusee, N. Y., he started with Solvay as an office boy and on the urging of his superiors went to Cornell University to study engineering. Alter receiving his de gree, he returned to Detroit and became manager of Solray s Delray plant, then In a protracted dump. Mr, Green introduced drastic changes in operation, engineered huge loans and put the plant back on its feet. Over the protest of his employers, who warned "If it doesn't work, you're through,” Green initiated the eight-hour-day—and lived to see it become the working unit of vlr-1 tually all industry. (Bud) Connell, 51, veteran city editor of the Charleston Gazette, died early today in a Charleston hospital after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Connell suffered a cerebreal hemorrhage April 7 while at his desk and was taken to the hospital. He never completely recovered con sciousness. He was widely known not only as i newspaperman but for his active ntarest in sports and as an alumnus )f West Virginia University. Mr. Connell began covering base sail for the Gazette at the age of L4. Miss McCarthy Dies; Retired GPO Employe Miss Rose McCarthy, 83, a retired employe of the Government Printing Office, died yesterday In Providence Hospital after a short Illness. She lived at 1457 Park road N.W. A native of Washington, she was the daughter of the late John O Toole McCarthy and the late Mary McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy, a Civil War veteran and later an employe of the Poet Office Department dur ing President Grant’s administra tion. was known to his co-workers as “king of the penmen,” according to Miss McCarthy’s family. They said Mr. McCarthy wrote so beautifully that while he worked for the Government, all of the Presi dent’s appointments would be sent to him to be filled in. He also was in great demand by the colleges here, who used to have him fill In their diplomas, the family reported. Miss McCarthy was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception Paro chial School here, and had worked for the GPO for more than-30 years when she retired about 13 years ago.
