4 Cancer Patients Spared Pain As Result of Brain Operations ly th« Auocioted Sr«u BALTIMORE April 19.-^Over whelming pain and nervousness In duced by impending death—char acteristics which frequently accom pany late stages' of cancer—today were spared four patients of Johns Hopkins Hospital as the result of a brain surgery technique first de veloped by two Washington surgeons. The hospital disclosed last night that prefrontal lobotomies—the sev ering of the thalamus from the frontal lobes of the brain—were performed on the four sufferers within the last six months by Dr. Frank Otenasek, visiting surgeon at the hospital. Dr. Otenasek *said that before the operations the patients, who had developed drug addictions, “re mained greatly disturbed by pain in spite of heavy doses of narcotics.” After the surgery, the pain, nerv ousness and tension were relieved, he reported. “The drug addiction also disap peared,” he added. The surgery said the operations had no bearing on the life expect ancy of the patients. The operation “broke the cycle of pain” at the psychic—as opposed to the physiological—level, he ex plained, and, while the actual "pain" remained, "what was altered was the fear of pain. ’ “After the operations, patients either said they were not suffering or that pain ‘did not bother' them,”j he reported. Dr. Otenasek said the ability of; the operation to relieve intractable plain was noted first by Drs. Wal ter Freeman and James Watts of the George Washington University Hospital, Washington. The two doctors, who introduced the prefrontal lobotomy to the United States, noted that two pa tients who had undergone the op eration for other reasons failed to report pain when one developed acute appendicitis and the other a ruptured peptic ulcer. The prefrontal lobotomy has been used for years in the treatment of certain mental disorders. Dr. Otenasek said he did not be lieve the use of the technique to combat ordinary drug addictions of the cancer patients were overcome because their use of narcotics was linked directly to the pain of the disease. Tibbeft's Resignation As Union Head Sought By Auocioted Prats NEW YORK, April 19.—Rcsigna tion of Lawrence Tibbett as presi dent of the AFL American Guild of Musical Artists and "a complete re vision” of the union’s constitution and.by-laws are sought by a group of members. Jack Petrill, public relations coun sel for the group, said yesterday 63 Guild members had signed a peti tion asking the Board of Governors to call a special meeting to hear members* complaints. The meeting also was sought, Mr. Petrill said, for the purpose of “clarifiing existing conditions and questionable actions of the presi dent, Board of Governors and ex ecutive secretary.” Hyman R. Faine is executive secretary. A list of grievances contained in the petition was made public by Mr. Petrill. Mr. Petrill said im a statement that Mr. Tibbett’s wife had “loaned money to the union since its incep tion” about eight years ago, and added: “Since the beginning of the union * * * Lawrence Tibbett has been its only president. No one else has ever been nominated by the Nominating Committee. Why? Was it subsi dized by the money put up by Mrs. Hbbett?’ J Gen. Collins and Wife Sued in Girl's Injury Suit seeking $20,000 damages from Lt. Gen. J. Lawton Collins, War Department chief of information, and Mrs. Collins, was filed in Dis trict Court yesterday in connection with injuries suffered by an 11 year-old girl allegedly struck by an automobile driven by Mrs. Collins. The suit charges the child, Ber nice Belt, colored, of the 400 block of O street S.W., was struck by the automobile last September at Fourth street and Maine avenue S.W. S.-Bound Platypuses ly »h« Auockitod Trm BALBOA, Canal Zone, April 19.— Ten thousand American earthworms rested placidly here today after a plane trip from New York, unaware that they are about to comprise the bill of fare for three hungry platy puses—Cecil, Betty Hutton and Penelope—who arrived here last night from Australia. The three duck-billed mammals, en route to the Bronx Zoo, during a 21-day voyage aboard the S. S.j Pioneer Glen from Brisbane already have tossed off several thousand worms of the English and Australian variety, not to mention four cans of worms picked up on Pitcairn Island. * Of late their provender has run dangerously low, however, and they have become fretful after receiving a substitute menu of custard made from duck and hen eggs and “yab bies”—a sort of fresh water crusta- i cean. Charged with the delicate task of | caring for the egg-laying mammals is David Fleay, somewhat harried I director of the Sir Colin Mackenzie Platypus Sanctuary in Healesville, j Australia. William Bridges, Bronx Zoo official, conveyed the worms here to pad out the platypus menu. Mr. Fleay said his charges had a good trip in their platypusarium—a specially constructed cage including features found in their natural habitat.
