Senator George Calls Broadcast Praising Wallace Untimely Senator George, Democrat of Georgia yesterday criticised the state Department for an overseas broadcast which he termed "lauda tory' of Henry A. Wallace. The untimellness of such a broad cast certainly should have been ob vious to any child of 10 years," he ?aid. citing Mr. Wallace's criticism in Europe of President Truman's anti-Communist program to aid Greece and Turkey. I wonder If the State Department knows if its right hand knows what its left hand is doing," Senator George added. Under Secretary of 8tate Acheson declined comment, saying he had not read the transcript of the broadcast, made on April 23. ι ranscnpi made Public. State Department officials later made public a transcript which in cluded a review of the book, "The Wallaces of Iowa," broadcast in a Germaft-language program. Among other things, the broadcast said: "Throughout the history of this family there runs like a red thread the eternal struggle lor an improve ment in the situation of the Ameri can farmer." The reviewer said achievements of the Wallaces were "considerable" when they dealt with agricultural problems, but "when they t/med to other problems, the success was dubious." The review continued: "Henry A. Wallace, as everybody knows both insider and outside of the United States, has enough of the rebel in him to throw the world into a turmoil once in a while." Recorded on April 1. The State Department issued a memorandum stressing that the script of the broadcast was prepared before Mr. Wallace left for his Eu ropean tour, which has stirred up an international furore. The memo said: "The review was recorded- on April 1 to be sent both to Austria and Germany for later broadcast there. This is standard service. In Germany, the "Magazine of the Air" is co-ordinated with direct transmission from New York. Thus, the program must be set here sev eral weeks in advance to allow time for the platters to arrive there. When the script was prepared in this office, Mr. Wallace had not left for Europe. This also was true of the Australian broadcast from this office." Acheson Denies Story He Will Retire Soon Undersecrtary of State Acheson doesn't think there is any "immi nent" chance of fulfilling his desire to return to private law practice. He was questioned at a news con ference yesterday about reports on Capitol Hill that he might resign soon and be replaced by Robert Lovett, former Assistant Secretary of War. He admitted that for the past two years he has wanted to get out of the State Department and return to private law practice. However, he saw no imminent chance of do ing so. Fresh difficulties with Yugoslavia over two old points of contention were disclosed by Mr. Acheson. He revealed that: 1. The United States has sent a new note asking Marshal Tito's gov ernment to release nine war-wrecked Italian ships, including the 51,000 ton liner Rex, which the Yugoslavs claim as war prizes. The note also calls upon the Belgrade government to invalidate a reported sale of the wrecks to the Ciechoslovakian Skoda arms plant. 2. Yugoslavia has asked the re turn of Yugoslav nationals held in Italy, whom the Belgrade regime calls "Quislings," but has rejected conditions set by the United States end Britain, contending only Yugo slavia is competent to judge the guilt of its nationals. Higher rate of depreciation per mitted during early yews of opera tion, allowing a more rapid write-off of the investment, reduction in tax payments and a larger net re turn from earnings. 3. Reduction of amount of working capital depoeit from at least 3 per cent to per cent of the original principal amount of the mortgage. 4. Possible readjustment of mort gage terms, if necessary in the future to enable projects built under pres ent higher-cost conditions "to main tain their competitive market posi tion and afford protection against decreased earnings." 5. Relaxation of former minimum property requirements to permit FHA staffs to accept other plans so long as they will provide "struc turally sound and well-designed projects with continuing rental ap peal." Bill Asks Tax Exemption For Reserve Officers Unit Tax exemption for the Washing ton headquarters of the Reserve Officers' Association of the United States was proposed yesterday in a bill introduced by Senator Spark man, Democrat, of Alabama, a member of the Senate District Committee. The measure covers property of the association at 2517 Connecticut avenue N.W., which includes a three-story building. The associa tion recently sought tax exemption at the District Building' and when this action failed, sought legislation.
