The group, which seeks "a healthy coalition of the arts" here and co operation of various cultural groups, again discussed the possibility of obtaining the Belasco Theater. The theater is now owned by the Treas ury Department. The committees Is to contact other groups in their respective art fields to seek their representation at forth coming meetings when further de tails on use of the Belasco will be discussed. Another duty of the com mittees will be to aid in formulating a "cohesive program." All the com mittees will work in conjunction with a general steering committee. Jack I. Berkman, who presided with J. G. Frain of the East and West Association, suggested the center should be operated on a co operative plan, and if the Belasco cannot be obtained, that an attempt be made to get the former WAVE Barracks at American University or a similar structure. "However," Mr. Berkman said, "I think the Treasury Department will listen to us very seriously." Many persons prominent in art circles gave their opinions on practi ! cal aspects of the plan for the ! center, particularly in respect to ! administration and finances. Mr. Berkman pointed out that the center must have city-wide participation. "It must be a com munity enterprise in the full sense of the word," he emphasized. Among activities which the center would foster would be a repertory theater and lectures, creative pres entations and adult education in the arts. Another meeting of the group Is scheduled to take place shortly. The group of District artiste seek ing this outlet for presentation of drama, creative dancing, music, painting and other creative work, met last night for the second time in the library of the parish ball of St. John's Episcopal Church. The committees and their chair men are: Batya Helen, dance; David Campbell, drama: Sophocles Pappas, music; Mr. Burkman, visual arts; Sol Panitz, radio, and Mr. Frain, Lay Committee. The function of the Lay Com mittee is to present the community and community organizations in the work of the proposed center. Embezzlement Trial To Resume Monday Trial of Paul A.
