Musical Artists Join Damrosch in Defense Of Kirsten Flagstad tr Λ· A««oclet»d f r«« NEW YORK, April 26.—Geraldine Farrar, Gladys Swarthout and other musical artiste have joined Walter Damrosch in condemning treatment of kirsten Flagstad, Wagnerian so prano, during a recent Philadelphia concert, Consolidated Concerts Corp. reported today. Mr. Damrosch, 85-year-old recently retired composer and conductor, yes terday said he felt a "sense of shame" over the indignities to which Mme. Flagstad was subjected and offered to accompany her at the piano if she should appear in Hew York again. The Concerts Corporation, which represents Mme. Flagstad, said the new expressions were transmitted through it to Mr. Damrosch. It said it had received no dissenting mes sages. Return to Husband Defended. Among congratulatory messages sent Mr. Damrosch, the agency said, was one from Oladys Swarthout and her husband, Frank Chapman, a Marine Corpe major during the ηαΐ) oaj&Aig wwu eu *»» «*o "ν»»* see, the only charge being levelled against her Is based on the fact that she returned to her httsband." Mme. Flagstad, whose Philadel phia performance was interrupted by stench bombs and catcalls, had been criticized for remaining in Nor way with her late husband, Henry Johaneen, who was accused of be ing a Nazi sympathizer. Damroech's "Courage" Praised. The agency said Miss Farrar, from her Rtdgefleld (Conn.) home, praised Dr. Damrosch for his "courageous" support of Mme. Flagstad and added: "The wicked, misleading impres sions that have been spread about in an effort to discredit her have not succeeded ta undermining the loy alty of the thousands who believe In her · ·. · it is disgusting and dis heartening that the democratic pro cess should be misused in an effort to destroy this great artist who is also a great woman." Others approving Dr. Damrosch's stand included Paul Althouse, Karin Branzell, contralto who sang with Mme. Flagstad at the Metropolitan, and Julius Huehn, former Metro politan bass, the agency reported. Mme. Flagstad expressed delight at Dr. Damrosch's offer but did not Indicate whether she would arrange another New York concert. During a concert here April 20 she was given a warm reception but pickets bearing protest signs marched in front of Carnegie Hall. W. B.
