C. Has Basic Needs For Fight on Cancer, Dr. While Declares Washington Is among the best equipped cities in the United States to carry on a campaign against can cer. That was the view «(pressed to day by Dr. William Charles White, one of the founders of the District Division of the American Cancel Society, as the organization pre pared to receive its first official progress report from this year's drive for $104,000. The residential division, headed by Mrs. John Clifford Polger, was scheduled to meet at 11:30 am. at Garfield Hospital. The business group, under Millard P. West, 'jr. and Philip L. Gore, will report its current nroeress at 12:30 n.ih. Mon day at the Army and Navy Club Dr. White, prominent for man) years in medical circles throughout the country, said he believed th« public should be informed that anj money contributed here to fight cancer would be well spent. Local cancer facilities, he asserted need to be greatly expanded, but a nucleus already exists here ot which to build, and Washington Is far ahead of most other cities in that respect. He said the city should be proud of the work being done for the de tection and treatment of cancer on the Garfield Hoepital grounds bj the Cancer Prevention Clinic and the Warwick Memorial Clinic, un der the direction of Dr. Calvin Τ Klopp. The former Is financed by tht Cancer Society, while the Warwick Memorial Clinic was set up undei an endowment. Dr. White said he thought the Washington Metropolitan Area should have five prevention clinics and three for treatment, but ob served that even if the money to establish them were available, a properly trained staff of doctors and nurses could not be found at the present time. There is little Incentive to those who would specialise in cancer, he declared. He said money could profitably be spent In establishing fellowships to enter this field. Much of the value of the existing clinics, he pointed out, lies in their op portunity to train experts in cancer. Dr. White also praised District Health Office George C. Ruhland for applying to the United States Public Health Service for assistance in conducting a study of the city's cancer problem. He called Dr. Ruhland "one of the main men in the District in try ing to get a program for the con trol of cancer." He said there was co-operation among the health agencies of the city, both official and voluntary, in promoting cancer control—"unlike some cities, where they are com peting with each other."
