CHICAGO, May 5.—Hotnemakers
with strained household budgets to
day could see a «possibility of lover
food prices within a few weeks or
months.
Some raw foods prices are lower
this month, compared with recent
peaks. This might have little im
mediate effect at the consumer level
but could be expected to show up
there within one to three months,
depending on length of processing
and distribution.
Among 10 major raw food coni
modities at jChicago markets as of
May 1, all out corn were sharply
below their recent peaks. Corn was
definitely higher than at the start
of the new year.
Wheat, butter, lambs, veal calves
and choice beef cattle were below
their levels of around January 2.
Other cattle, hogs, eggs, wholesale
meats and poultry were about the
dame as January 2, after having been
higher in the previous four-month
Cotton Higher.
Cotton was higher, however, and
the Associated Press wholesale com
modity price Index—which Includes
other items as well as farm prod
ucts—was higher than four, six and
12 months ago.
Corn, a basic food for livestock
and poultry, was $1.90 a bushel for
No. 2 yellow on March 27, but was
$1.65 Vi last Thursday. It was $1.37
around the start of the year when
supplies were heavier, and around
$1.46 six months and a year ago.
Wheat sold at a recent record
price of $2.89 a bushel on March 15,
but was quoted nominally last
Thursday at around $2.67 a bushel
for the No. 2 hard quality.
Live hogs ran a top price of $23.75
a hundred pounds to start the new
month, compared with the record
$30 on March 25. The average price
generally follows the top price fluc
tuation. On January 2 the top was
$23.50 on November 1 it was $23.25,
and a year ago it was $14.85.
Cattle Drops to $26.25.
The record cattle price was $39
a hundredweight on November 29.
Last Thursday the top was $26.25,
last January 2 it was $32.00, No
vember 1 it ran $36,000, and last May
1 It was $18.
On lambs the record peak hit $28
October 16, two days after removal
of price controls. Last Thursday
lambs topped at $23.50, compared
with $23.85 January 2, $22.75 No
vember 1 and $16.25 a year ago.
Veal calves set a record last
February 12 of $29 and matched
that price four times later, but last
Thursday they were down to $24.
They were $26 January 2, $21 No
vember 1, and $16.50 a year ago.
Good and choice wholesale meats,
followed the same pattern, lnclufl
ing beef, veal, lamb, and pork.
Thursday they ranged from 31 cents
a pound to 52 cents, the upper level
appearing on pork loin cuts and re
sulting from higher-priced hogs a
month ago.
Live Fouitry uropi.
On January 2 the comparable
range was 30 to 48 cents. Last No
vember 1 it was 26 to 52—again on
pork, and a year ago it was 19%
to about 25.9 cents a pound, the
upper price going to lamb.
In the live poultry trade, roasters,
fryers and broilers ranged between
43 and 45 cents at the recent peak
on October 7, but they were 28 to
41 Thursday. They were 33 to 38
at the start of the year, 31 to 37 on
Nov. 1, and 30 to about 34 a year
ago.
Quality eggs hit 56 to 59 Vi cents
a dozen October 10 and were 44 to
45 Thursday. TTiey were 40 to 43
January 2, 46 to 54 November 1, and
35^ to about 36 a year ago.
Butter, which was 87 cents a
pound on the October 10 record date,
was down to 60 Thursday, compared
with 74% at the year's start, 75 six
months ago, and 46 (not counting a
15-cent Government suhsidy) a year
ago.
