Menial Hygiene Chief
Quits in Montgomery,
Blames Public Apathy
Dr. Mabel Wilkin last nigfct an
nounced her resignation as director
of the Montgomery County Mental
Hygiene Clinic as she issued a
statement criticizing the public's
"apathetic" attitude toward mental
hygiene work.
Her resignation will become ef
fective October 1, but it is expected
that a new director will be appoint
ed by the executive board before
that time.
She reported that a total of 1304
visita to the county mental hygiene
clinic were made far th« year end
ing May 1, "only a fraction of the
total mental hygiene needs in a
community of this size.' <
Montgomery oouiuy, sne as
serted, "as a comparatively wealthy
and veil - educated community,
might be expected to asume front
rank leadership in the promotion of
mental health—the number one
health problem of our times.
"But here, as elsewhere, public
opinion continuas apathetic to the
tremendous unfulfilled mental hy
giene, which is to say, human needs
of tte cûtlzenry and, pre-eminently,
for the good of · · · its children.
"Although the clinic is solidly es
tablished in the county we remain
a small team dependent on a shoe
-string of a budget available each
year only in so far as «he citizens of
the county are able and inclined to
contribute to the Community Chest
which supports us. '
"We are hampered—like the
county juvenile court—by lack of
staff and by lack of the necessary
auxiliary community facilities · * ·."

mission in the District of Columbia
National Guard, according to Brig.
Gen. Albert L. Cox, commander of
the, unit. Gen. Cox said there were
many vacancies in the unit's raedi
cap corps, and the shortage of doc
tors is a handicap in the processing
of recruits.
