GLebe 1100 "Open every Friday 'til 9 P.M.\ Lovette Choral Club Honors Director On Anniversary By Alice Ever? mo η The concert given by the Lovette Choral Club lut night In Barker Hall was In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the directorship of " λ Whitford Lovette. *A Urge and friendly audience applauded the singing of the members, all women and endowed with good voices. They formed an attractive r-Nvns with a corsage of red roses on a stage that was decorated with palms and baskets of flowers. The club Is aii outgrowth of an organization formed in 1925 by the late Thomas S. Lovette, whose memory is commemorated In the group's name. Also in tribute to the founder, the present club begins all its programs with the singing of "The Kingdom of Our Gracious God" from Lovette's "God's King dom." Last night this prologue was conducted by Mrs. Lovette. Through her efTorte the club has occupied an important .place in the city's musical life and has been an active member of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Annual concerts have been high lights of the organ ization's work and many outstand ing artists have appeared on these programs m soloists. For the an niversary concert, the soloist was Joseph Henderson, pianist, who made his local debut. Mrs. Lovette, whose health has prevented her from continuing the directing of the choral group, con ducted only the first number, .relin quishing the post for the remainder of the program to the associate director. Francise Bass Wilson. The distinguishing style that Mrs. Lovette has attained in the group was exemplified by a fine delivery of Mozart's "Alleluia." The first of three numbers of the classic period, it was followed by a song arrange ment of Brahms' "Waltz in A Flat," Orieg's "Elfin Dance," Liszt's "Love's Dream" and Brahms' "Around the Gypsy Fire." Two of the programmed numbers, R. Deane Shure's "He Walketh Upon the Wings of the Wind" and Boris Levenson's "Castillian Bolero" were dedicated to the club. Mr. Shure, who was present in the audience, was publicly thanked for his dedication. His white spiritual, "The Old Boat Zion" was also given with the incidental solo sung by Basel Cake. Mrs. Cake was beard again In Strause* "Song of the Danube" in the «οίο portion arranged by Mrs. WOaon. Mr. Henderson displayed a pianis tie gift of a high order in his per formance of Liszt's "Fuaerailles" and the Bach-Busoni "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor." He is master of a sonorous tone, an ample range of dynamics and a veil grounded technical equipment. These works of more exacting requirement· were eminently suited to his style which is less, adaptable to the delicate Imagery of Griffes' "The White Peacock" also included in the group he played. His success was imme diate and to the extent of insistant demands for encores. / The lovely voice of Carolyn Schulte was heard In the solo per tiens of Lovette's "Heart of » Rose," the choral arrangement of which wh made by Mn. Lovette, in Oenee's "Italian Salad" and in Levenson's "Castillian Bolero." dale L. Cran mer, the club's accompanist, gave excellent support throughout the program.
