St Alban's Senior Master Ends 30*Year Tenure on May 31 Alamm Pay Tribute To Service Given by Rev. James Henderson By Jessie Font Evans * St. Alban’s alumni around. the world will note with regret the re tirement of a great teachtf, friend, adviser and coach from the school’s faculty after the commencement May 31. He is the senior master, the Rev. James Hendersbn, affec tionately known as “Pop” to three generations of students. As one of the members of the class of *28 puts it: “His spirit is imbedded deep in the school’s very foundation and in the heart of every Albanian whose privilege it was to have known him.” This was the consensus at the April alumni reunion, when at the largest gathering in the school’s history, Mr. Henderson was pre sented a silver tray and a corporate gift of over (600 from the Alumni Association. REV. JAMES HENDERSON. When William Howell Church, the headmaster who preceded the school’s present dynamic head Canon Albert Hawley Lucas, was offend a salary Increase for what - be was accomplishing for the Na tional Cathedral School for Boys, he elected instead to add a new master to its faculty. His choice was the Rev. James Henderson, school ractor from 1918 to 1929. From Missionary Endeavor. The new master, who came to St. Alban’s with his wife, Blanche Hen derson, and their infant son “Jim mie” to take up resident quarters in the school, had been serving in missionary field work in the great Northwest. An impressive figure, hfe stood 8 feet 1 inch and weighed 225 pounds. From the first he ranked as senior master on the faculty. He became as well a coach in three major sports, in addition to his duties as a teacher of mathematics and sacred studies. George B. McGehee, one of his students of those days and now a fellow member of the faculty, says of his former teacher: "His great energy and warm-hearted af fection for his fellowmen, his clean Christian living and his straight thinking have molded St. Alban’s graduates by the very fact of their simple reality. His was the privil ege—with Mr. and Mrs. Church—of . being the core of the foundation on which the great St. Alban’s of today was built.” Born in Belfast, James Henderson came to Massachusetts as a boy of 8. His preparatlgn for his life of service was begun through teach ing. His schools were. Taft, Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., and the Berkeley Divinity School. At Trinity, when he weighed 167 pounds, it is said that he was foot ball’s first roving center. In college baseball he had few peers as a 1 catcher. In basket ball be was a lint-rate floonnan, an accurate shot and a fine defensive player. Is it surprising that he coached successive St. Alban’s teams to vic tory in these major sports, or that his students equaled their prowess on the playing fields in their class room records and college board ex aminations? Coached University Football. The States of Washington and South Dakota have reason to be grateful also to this athletic man of God for the way he combined the spiritual with daily life and living. As a part of missionary work for the Episcopal Church when he was in Spokane, Wash., he helped make self-sufficient and filled to capacity a church school that had been in difficult straits. In South Dakota, as extra-church activity, he coached the University of South Dakota’s greatest football team and 25 years afterward, the beloved “football parson” was guest of honor at the university's alumni dinner honoring the leadership he had developed. The Hbndenon's only son, James, jr., is an alumnus of St. Alban’s and of his father’s alma mater, Trinity College. He is proving himself a teacher of promise at the Loomis School In Windsor, Conn. Unmindful of frequent offers else where, the Rev. James Henderson has been content to make his work with the boys of St. Alban’s his con tinuing parish. How that the time has come to leave the school to which he and his wife have given nearly 30 years of their lives, they have decided to stay on in Washing ton, so deep have grown the roots of their humanitarian service here. After his last official connection with a school graduation at St Alban’s, Mr. and Mrs. Henderson will spend the summer near Squam Lake, New Hampshire, where Mr. Henderson long has been spiritual adviser to « summer camp for boys. Those who know him best are convinced Mr. Henderson’s “retire ment” is only a step toward the next active lap of his life's journey. In the near future they expect to find him coaching students or filling emergency assignment^ in local Episcopal pulpits.
