To bid a slam with a nine high
suit requires either strong nerves
or sound analysis, or perhaps a bit
of both. In today's hand from the
recent Eastern championships, Mrs.
H. G. Ansln of Boston, one of the
foremost players of New England
and the outstanding female competi
tor of the younger generation, com
bined the above qualities with care
ful play to bring home a well-earned
slam.
South opened with one diamond.
It will be noted that while the hand
had appropriate distribution, it is
too strong for an opening bid of one
no-trump. It possesses a point eount
of 21 which makes it just a little
short of a standard two no-trump
opening. The compromise suit βία
should be made in those cases. When
North responsed with one spade,
bright things loomed on the horizon
and South made the game forcing
jump shift of three clubs. Mrs. Ansin
showed her second suit and South
now jumped to four spades. Such
action almost invariably denotes a
four-card trump holding, but in this
case South felt it was imperative
for ftie purpose of relieving part
ner's probable anxiety about the tex
ture of the trump suit. In the face
of this strong bidding. North was
justified in showing the king of
cluhs and South returned the
courtesy by showing the king of
hearts. (While all this cue bidding
was taking place it wa$ naturally
understood from South's jump in
spades that that suit would be the
ftnal trump.)
That was all the information that
North required and she promptly
contracted for slam, reasoning that
>nly one trick would be lost and
Jiat in either spades or diamonds.
The jack of trumps was opened
ind three rounds were taken. Mrs.
\nsin gave herself three chances to
nake the hand. She first tried the
iiamonds, leading the 10. If East
turned up with the ace her troubles
urould be over. But the queen went
ίο West's ace and a club was re
;urned. She then tried for a heart
areak which failed to come off.
(Pour heart tricks could have been
scored by finessing the eight on the
Jiird round. Her failure to do so,
lowever, is linked up in some man
ier with the circumstances that
:ards are opaque.)
As a last resort, declarer finessed
