The bidding:
South West North East.
1 spade Pass 2 hearts Pass
3 spades Pass 4 diamonds Pass
4 hearts Pass 4 spades Pass
6 spades Pass Pass Pass
Opening lead: 10 of clubs.
When a great many points are at
stake, the best possible chance
should be taken to fulfill the con
tract even tho it involves going
down an additional trick .should the
plan fail.
In today’s hand, South became
declarer at a contract of six spades
on bidding that meets with our
' unqualified approval. North's re
sponse of two hearts was routine and
after South made a jump rebiri.
North realized there was a good
chance for slam because he himself
held the equal of an opening bid.
He, therefore, took pains to show
the ace of diamonds, whereupon
South returned the compliment in
hearts. North was now content to
show his spade support and South
did the rest. He knew that the ace
of clubs was adversely held, because
North had failed to show it, but
with the lead coming up to him
! there was no immediate danger and
i he hoped to be able to develop
i partner's heart suit for discards
= The 10 of clubs was led, taken by
| the ace and the four returned. De
clarer won and trumps were ex
tracted. He was now apparently
i presented with a choice of plays,
i if West held the kind of diamonds,
he could finese the queen and dis
card a heart on the ace. The al
ternative was to try to guess vho
had the queen of hearts. South
rfecided on the latter course. He led
a number of trumps with the hope
that the discards would be enlight
ening. but the opposition would not.
j furnish any clews. At length, he
j played, the ace of hearts and
1 finessed the 10 in dummy losing to
East's queen.
Declarer hyd not chosen the best
line of play. He placed all his
hopes in the heart finesse. He
should have given himself two
chances instead of one. After
trumps are out he should play the
two high hearts. There was a
chance that the queen will fall
doubleton. If it does, his worries
are over. If it fails to apepar. he
still has remaining the hope that
the diamond finesse will succeed.
It is true that declarer incurs the
risk of going down two tricks in
stPfld of nnp if East has the kind of
[diamonds and the remaining heart.
I but surely it is worth it. Bear in
| mind that if the only consideration
I were the location of the queen of
hearts the finesse would be a better
play than the attempt to drop it,
but where eight cards of a suit are
held and the queen is missing the
play for the finesse is only slightly
superior to the play for the drop so
that if an additional play suggests
itself it is usually profitable to abon
don the finesse. Remember when
the finesse fails declarer is a victim
of sudden death. If the play for
i the drop fails declarer still holds
the lead and retains the hope that
[his alternate play may win.
Take My Word for It

Saturday Roll Call.
Los Angeles—We are a little
confused as to the exact meaning
of the term “huckster." Will you
please explain?—Mrs. J. W. M.
Answer—Generally speaking, a
huckster is a hawker or peddler of
small wares, usually one who calls
attention by ringing a bell or crying
out in the street. By extension,
huckster is often used to designate
a merchant who sells inferior goods
by means of misleading or dishonest
methods such as fraudulent adver
Arlington—You say that divan fa
kind of sofa) is pronounced “DY
van,” and this is the dictionary
pronunciation. But I lived in Bul
garia for several years, and my
Turkish friends there pronounce
divan as dee-VAHN. I consider any
other pronunciation as incorrect.—
Mrs. D. L. C.
Answer—We must not forget that
English is made up entirely of words
borrowed from the various language
of the world. If we should attempt
to preserve all the foreign pronun
ciations of the 600.000 words that
make up English we'd have a far
worse pronouncing mess on our
j hands than we have at present,
[ which is bad enough.
Divan (sofa) has long been eon
Isidered English. And the correct
English pronunciation is: DY-van.
