Gravatte 730 18th St. Realtor NA. 0783 Raft Expedition Sights Polynesian Birds After Sailing 4,500 Miles NEW YORK, July 12 (Based or radio reports from the mid-Paciflc) (NANA).—The Kon-Tiki raft ex pedition now nearing the end of t 4,500-mile trans-Paciflc drift have sighted the first birds from th< Polynesian Islands toward whicl they are sailing. ineir position yesterday was izt degrees 37 minutes west, 12 degree! 23 minutes south. They reportec “No wind during the last 24 hours,’ as a result of which they drifted onlj 13 nautical miles instead of the usua dally average of around 40 sea miles Previously the expedition hac radioed that if all went well anc present speeds were maintained, thej should make their first landfal about July 21. They expected ther to sight the island of Pukapuka ir the Tuamotu group. They are aim ing for the island of Tahiti, severe hundred miles beyond this group. The 45-foot raft, powered only bj wind and ocean current, has so fai covered 3,413 sea miles. It lefi Callao, Peru, April 28. Scientists Find Balsa Craft j Performed Well on Ocean j AT SEA, July 11 (Delayed).—After 175 days at sea the Kon-Tiki expedi tion's raft has now drifted 3,400 nau itical miles, or 3,900 land miles, west ward from Peru. We have only 488 miles to go before reaching our first possible landfall. Though it is too early to draw final conclusions from j our experiences, we have made some j Interesting observations. The balsa wood raft of prehis toric South America design had fine sea capacities and impressive speed. It was delicate but sea worthy and was easily the most commodious of all prehistoric ves sels. In the roughest seas our balsa logs ride big waves like a duck and j level out whitecaps like a heavy I steamroller. It has been maintained ! that Balsa absorbs water and after I a short time the logs will sink. We cut and drifted our own logs down I an Ecuadorian jungle river in Jan uary and are now three-fourths of | the way to Polynesia with the logs still floating high. Sails on Inca Rafts. It has frequently been held that pre-Columbic America was unac quainted with the use of sail. But the early Spaniards describe sails on Inca rafts and a toy vessel with a square sail has been found in a pre-Inca grave on the coast of Peru. Our experiments have shown that since the prehistoric Peruvians in vented centerboards they must in deed have had sail. A premeditated voyage by prehis j toric sun followers from Peru would allow them to carry sufficient sweet potatoes and dried food supplies to i take them far into Polynesia.- We have at present potatoes, gourds and ! coconuts exposed to weather in Pe ruvian baskets on the foredeck. The potatoes, as well as the coconuts, have long since started to sprout and ten-inch coconut palms com-, pete in greenness with the seagrass covering the logs. Early South American raftsmen carried their water supply in bam boo canes with the little hole in the end plugged up. We have such canes on board, with an inside diameter of four to live inches. One such cane holds about 25 gallons and 30 canes may fit easily side by side under the plaited bamboo deck. There the shade and constant overwash keep them at exact sea temperature. If 750 gallons are insufficient, then two or three layers of bamboo canes could go between the logs “and the bamboo deck. Any sunvuuuu niiiuiig Mime pre historic fishermen seems incredible, as flying fish land on our low raft every night and a small quantity of edible crabs can be picked right off the logs. Most mornings, edible squids also are found on board. Grabs Shark’s Tail. The shade under our slowly drift ing raft attracts quantities of big fish, easily caught for food. As this is written, three sharks swim around us, one so close that I could touch its dorsal fin with my foot. Sharks are usually lazy and dull unless there is blood in the water, which makes them furious. We learn their habits and capaci ties through constant association. Last week when a 6-foot shark swal lowed some bait at the edge of the raft, I grabbed his tail and twisted the animal up on the raft before it summoned Itself to fight. They often seem paralyzed when caught unexpectedly. Shark filet, soaked one day in seawater, then cooked, tastes 'like haddock and provides food for many men. i The strong sun also permits rafts men to serve dried fish. Drifting voyagers could gather rain during sporadic showers. We are experimenting now at quenching thirst with the Juice from raw fish. This can jpe secured by twisting pieces through a cloth or simply by chewing portions of fish in native fashion. Although we have a suffi cient water supply, we drink little as a constant breeze, our cool bamboo hut and plenty of bathing create little thirst. Our experiences with the little known balsa raft have, on the whole, convinced all of us that with such craft in eommon use along the coast of ancient Peru, with the wind and current sweeping incessantly toward the west, Polynesia can hardly have been undiscovered by South Ameri can raftsmen.
