The bidding:
South West North EasfS
14 1 57 1 NT Pass'
2 0. 2 <50 2 NT Dbl.
Pass Pass 3 4 Dbl.
Pass Pass Pass
Opening lead, nine of hearts.
If ever I have seen a dual person
ality at the card table, it is South of i
today’s hand. During the bidding he
was Mr. Hyde and did nothing right.
In the play, he was a sparkling Dr.
Jekyll and could do no wrong.
The first indiscretion was com
mitted in the selection of the open
ing bid. With hands of minimum
strength and suits that are next-door
neighbors (as diamonds and clubs),1
the modern practice is to disregard
the difference in length and open;
with the higher ranking suit, so that
both may be shown at the least ex
pense. This voluntarily sacrifices
precision to economy. One diamond,
therefore, is the preferred opening.
When North bid one no-trump
South, having no additional values,
should have taken no further action,
much less should he have named a
suit higher in rank than the one he
started with. This would force part
ner to bid three clubs if he desired to
return to the first suit, a situation for
which he was not well prepared.
When the two-no-trump bid was
doubled, North elected to run to
three clubs, though the fniir.Ao
diamond holding would appear to
be the more logical choice, feast
doubled because he believed the op
position to be floundering.
The nine of hearts was opened and
taken by the ace. The three of dia
monds was returned and South did ■
some rapid calculation. If East's ]
ead was orthodox (fourth best).
West has but one diamond. That it
might be the king is not too remote
because holding that card East might
not have been so quick to lead the
suit when dummy is obviously not
rich in entries. But the important
consideration is that if East has the
king of diamonds, the entire suit
cannot be picked up anyhow, so de
clarer went up with the ace and
great was the fall thereon.
Since the contract was well on the
way to be fulfilled, declarer found it
desirable to rid West of his one
trump (surely East must have four
for the double i and the ace of
trumps followed immediately after
the ace of diamonds. West, who had
contracted the habit, dropped an
other singleton king, and declarer
scored an overtrick.
If there is a fisherman in the audi
ence who ever did better with two
successive casts, he may well
speak up.

Take My Word for It
By Frank Colby
Saturday Forum.
West New York: I should like
to know the exact translation of
the opera name "Cavallerie Rustl
bairn. -o. o.
Answer: It means “rustic chiv
alry."
Pronounce it: KAH-vas-lay
REE’ah ROOSS-tee-KAH’nah.
Hartford: We have a controversy.
My friend insists that the word
“beneficence" is accented on the
third or “fie” syllable. I say the
second syllable should be accented.
Right?—F. S. N.
A. Right. The correct pronuncia
tion is: bee-NEFF-uh-s’nss.
Webster Groves: Which is the
preferred name for a native of
Scotland, “Scotchman” or “Scots
man”?—G. L.
A. In Scotland the form “Scots
man” is preferred. Also correct Is
“Scot” (singular) and “Scots"
(plural). The name is from the
old Irish “Scuit,” name of a North
Ireland people who settled in Scot
land in the 5th century.
Cleveland: To settle an argument
will you please state whether the ,
adjective “insipid” can describe food .
as, “This meat is insipid”?—A. B. '
A. Of course it can; it is primarily
a “food” word, for its literal mean
ing is "without taste or savor.” By
extension, it also means lifeless,
dull, stale, as “an insipid plot, an
insipid speech, an insipid motion
picture.”
Santa Paula: Here Is a clipping
of a magazine ad about carillonic
bells. It quotes a well-known min
ister as saying, "Your 'Carillonic
Bells’ has been in operation in our
church for almost a year, and there
has been fulsome praise from our
own members and other groups.”
Can’t you do something, Colby?—
G. M. M.
A. For several years I have de-;
voted much space to the word “ful-!
enmo ’' Avnlnininrr thni 4f tvinnn*
“offensive; repulsive; disgusting:1 •
foul.” Merriam Webster’s defines i
"fulsome praise” as "offensive from {
insincerity or baseness of motive”!
Nevertheless, we continue to rea^ ■
of “mom’s fulsome meals,” of rooms
being flooded with “fulsome sun*'
shine,” of girls wearing long and
“fulsome” evening dresses, etc. * i
Professional writers especially
should shun fulsome. There is nji
place in good modern English for
the obsolete word.
