When you find It Impossible to de feat. a contract on the merits of the cards that you actually hold, the only hope is that declarer may be in duced to adopt a false theory about J the hand and ride to his own de struction. The East of today's hand realized that there was no honest, way to prevent the fulfillment of the slam contract, but by inducing declarer to form a false picture of the distribution, was able to defeat, a contract that on its face appeared to be invincible. The bidding is not a model of per fection. It leaves something to be desired in the way of a delicate touch. The contract of six spades is not a bad one and, as a matter of fact, should be sought by tournament players who are interested in squeez ing the last drop out of the hand. But at. rubber bridge, a contract of six diamonds would be Just as ac ceptable. No amount of trickery on the part, of the defense could have prevented the fulfillment of such a contract.' In fact, against a club or a heart opening, a grand slam can be made in diamonds. West made the normal lead of the king of clubs, and East realized that declared must hold at least five spades to the king, queen, Jack. The opening lead was obviously from the king, oueen. and declarer was going to win the trick with the ace and probably attempt to ruff a club in dummy before extracting trumps. East played the jack of clubs on the first trick. Declarer won and re turned a club upon which East played the three. West naturally continued with a third round of the suit and declarer, convinced that East had started with only two clubs, ruffed with the ace In dummy to prevent an overruff. If the trumps were 3-2, the con tract would still be fulfilled. When trumps failed to break, East’s hold ing was good for a trick and the contract was defeated. East had nothing to lose by his false card and everything to gain. My sympathies go out to the unfortunate Mr. South. Who ran blame him? (Copyright, 1P47, by Charley H. Gorer > Take My Word for It By Frank Colby Let’s Get It Straight. It always happens. Whenever this modest column defends the right of Americans to speak their ovn language, departing from British usage in spelling, grammar, idiom, vocabulary and pronuncia tion, certain of my readers (usually Englishmen who have come to live in this great land of freedom and abundance) remind me sternly to this effect; "You borrowed our lan guage, you know, and have no right to change it.” Or, “We gave you our language; we expect you to guard its purity.” i People who make sdeh statements doubtless are sincere in their belief: they are also utterly mistaken in their facts. V. In no sense did we borrow or adopt English; in no sense did Eng land lend or give us “their” lan guage. How can I make such a statement? For the very simple reason that, until the Declaration of IndeDendence. this country was a British colonial possession, and Its people were British subjects, and English was their native language, exactly as is the case In Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. If Canada should decide to sever all ties with Great Britain, and be come an independent republic, could It be said that, she borrowed or adopted or was given the Eng lish language? The Idea Is absurd As a matter of cold fact, the great majority of Canadians of English descent speak American English and not British English. There is no more reason why we should follow British linguistic usage than we should adopt her woeful plumbing for lack of It), ex change our central heating plants for her fitful fireplaces, transform our money Into pounds, shillings and pence, or expect Miss America to wear Queen Mary’s hats. We Americans have created the largest and most important lan guage in the world. It Is vastlv different from British English, and that difference becomes more marked with every passing day. I, for one, refuse to have an in feriority complex because I speak American as an American should.
