Vitamin Believed Found
In Poultry Research
By th» Associated Press
KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 25.—A
member of the faculty and a grad
uate student at the University of
Tennessee report discovery of an
unidentified nutrient, believed to
be a new vitamin.
Dr. Homer Patrick, professor of
animal husbandry, said he and Ed
ward L. Stephenson of Calhoun,
Tenn., the student, had made the
discovery after a year's work with
poultry feed. He said:
“We are working on the isolation
of a new vitamin and when it is
properly isolated and synthesized
with regular rations it will be an
Important factor In livestock feed
ing and probably in human nutri
tion.”
He said charts showed the nutri
ent resulted In a 25 per cent Increase
In the weight of six-week-old
chickens.
The discovery was made experi
menting with liquids from spoil
ing fish, Dr. Patrick said.
It is estimated that there were
8.609,000 acres devoted to rubber
plantations in 1938.
