U. S. Veterans' Rush
To Settle in Australia
Taxes Shipping Space
ly HwVkiteclotMl Prau
SAN FRXNCISCO, Aug/ 27.—So
many American veterans have ap
plied for permission to settle in
Australia that the Australian consu
late here is having trouble finding
shipping space for them all.
The first of a group to go "Down
Dnder” will leave here September 5,
with 44 persons making the trip.
Larger groups are scheduled to de
part in October and December.
Last May 20 the Australian cabinet
approved a travel subsidy plan for
American veterans wishing to settle
in Australia. * v
John Hewitt, San Francisco repre
sentative of the Australian Depart
ment of Information, said, response
to the plan had been startling.
"Thousands of applicants and
written applications filled our offices
here and in New York,” he said.
“Eleven inquiries came from one
small town in Idaho. A flyer phoned
from Southern California asking
about the opportunities for transport
pilots in Australia. He was speak
ing for a group of 20 or so experi
enced pilots.
"Our land is almost as big as
yours, but the population is only
7,500,000. We want 20,000,000 and
we’d like most of them to be your
chaps. America saved our bacon in
the war. We know the Americans
and we like them,
"There is no unemployment down
there. We could furnish 100,000 Jobs
tomorrow if we could but get the
men to Australia.”
Number one Qn the first sailing t
list is Kurtis R. W. Martischewsky, \
.^potts Bluff, Nebr., a Signal Corps i
veteran. Mr. Martischewski met ]
Joyce Evans of Booval, near Bris- ]
bane, in 1943 while in the service,
became engaged by mail and is going
to Australia to marry her and take
a job with Australia's telephone
company.
New Zealand Cities Grow
New Zealand’s new census shows
Auckland with 274,000 population;
Wellington, 180,000; Christchurch,
155,200, and Dunedin, 88,200—all reg
istering good increases in the last
two years.
Sinkiang Province in China is also
known as Chinese Turkic tan, Chi
nese Tartary and Kashgaria.
