Clepr Weather Marks
End of Antarctfc Storm
I By Comdr. Finn Ronne, U. S. N. R.

RONNE EXPEDITION BASE,
ANTARCTIC, Aug. 20 (Delayed).—
This is my third trip to the Ant
arctic. On some days I wonder why
II keep coming back, and on others—
like today—I know why.
' I am sitting in my little shack.
A flve-day blizzard has just blown
itself out. Now, for the first time in
months, the sky is a bright blue
overhead and the first rays of the
summer sun are creasing bright
highlights and deep shadows into
the rugged rock-and-ice face of
Figure 4 Mountain.
Th<* mountain has been lurking
there in the darkness during the
long winter months. Now it stands
forth—strong and bold and a figure
of intense, lonely grandeur. The
Harriet* * *1*. u.
early rise Is tinted a light blue In
the sun, and the varying pastels of
Its higher peaks give it an ominous
depth that seem to ma^e it move
right into this room.
Right beside Figure 4 Mountain
(which is shaped like a “4"), is a
corner of deeply-frozen Marguerite
Bay. Several large icebergs, trapped
in the bay while drifting out to sea,
are frozen solidly In place. One
large berg, which turned over several
times before the freeze-up, is now
security locked Into the bay—but It
still looks dangerous with long blue
green lciclfs that obscure the Port
of Beaumont anchored behind it.
The extent of the panorama in. this
clear, cold air, is hard to Imagine,
i Looking acrdss Marguerite Bay, I
can make out the peak of Alexander
Island, 80 miles away, in sharp con
trast against the blue sky behind it.
You don't know what you’re
1 missing.
Poison Plant's Kin Good
While the nightshade plant Is a
deadly poison, all its relatives are
good, healthful eating, potatoes,
eggplants, peppers and tomatoes.
The diameter of the earth at the
equator is 7.926 miles. Through the
i poles it’s 7,899.
Nearly one-third of American
farms raise cotton.
