Low Output, Inflation Peril Indian Economy, Top Industrialist Says By Phillips Talbot Foreign Corr«pond«nt of The Star and the Chicago Daily News BOMBAY, India, Aug. 28.—Owing to reduced industrial production and rising prices, India 'is skidding to ward an economic crisis “of the first magnitude” according to J. R. D. Tata. The chairman of the gigantic Tata Industrial empire, largest in India, addressed an annual meeting of the Tata Iron & Steel Co. late yesterday. Mr. Tata listed labor disturbances snd “the damaging effects of heavy taxation imported in the last budget on industrial expansion and busi ness activities in general” as the main causes for industrial setbacks despite political independence. Since prewar years, finished steel production has dropped about one quarter. Production of other key items such as cloth, coal and sugar, also has decreased seriously, he declared. At the same time the general price index has nearly trebled while wages and salaries have about doubled. To prevent a major setback in the national economy, Mr. Tata advised the new central and provincial gov ernments to “take firm and im mediate steps to arrest the present disastrous trends and re-establish the country's agricultural and in dustrial productivity. Mr. Tata’s report, which is im portant because his company con trols the largest iron and steel works in the British Empire, reflects the gloomy forecasts issued recently by! the Reserve Bank of India and other agencies. All seem to feel that the infant! national governments will quickly be faced with an economic storm unless Immediate steps are taken to curb inflation and reduced production. Potatoes and petunias are mem bers of the same plant family. KNITTING s smart— |j Why not at art today? THE KNITTING BAR 3009 Naylor Rd. S.E. Tela. TW. 1391 • * s 1458 Park Rd. AT. 5029 Food in Small Cans To Be Available Again Sy the Associated Press NEW YORK, Aug. 28.—Small cans of food containing one or two serv ings will be back in grocery stores this fall for the first time since the war. They will be available only in limited quantities at first, and can manufacturers said the rate at which supplies improve will depend on the tin plate situation. I A number of canners see a ready market for the small cans and are reported to have ordered large quan tities from manufacturers. "If tin plate continues to be as tight as it has been all this year, lit is possible that next year may not see 100 per cent fulfillment of canners’ requirements for the small cans,” one industry spokesman said. Packing of most food in small cans, containing 1 to l1-. cupfuls, was eliminated by the Government shortly after Pearl Harbor to con serve tin and steel. The most popular sized can al Downstairs Bookstore ways has betn the No. 2 type which holds about 2V* cupfuls of food, and that is the one used chiefly during the war. Chief complaints about the larger sized cans come from .'mail families or persons living alone who cannot finish the larger portion tt one meal and either have no facilities for keeping leftovers or don't like to keep small amounts for another day. 526 12th St. N.W.
