erm ‘‘Hansen's disease.” after Dr.
ierhard Hansen. Norwegian physi
ian (1841-1912) who. in 1879, dis
overed the bacillus which causes
he disorder.
This strikes me as a very sensible
md humane w'ay to overcome the
inreasoning horror with which
sufferers of the disease have always
>een singled out. As a matter of
lact, there are scores of serious
liseases far more prevalent and
ransmissible than Hansen’s. For
ixample, who would regard with
•evulsion and dread the un
’ortunate victim of infantile
jaralysis? Or of influenza? Or of
uberculosis?
