ME. 4143 J f - 1 Ousted Prosecutor Called as Witness By Overell Defense By'the Asjociaitd trni SANTA ANA, Calif., Aug. 30.—Dis trict Attorney James L. Davis of Orange County, who was ousted as prosecutor of the Overell yacht deaths trial, was added today to the j list of witnesses called by the de fense next week In a new phase of the long hearing. Mr. Davis has been ordered to ap pear with Attorney General Fred Howser, the man who removed him. Mr. Howser installed Eugene D. Williams as special prosecutor. Mr. Williams had just returned to this country from Tokyo, where he as sembled cases against accused Jap anese war criminals. Mr. Davis has charged that his removal was oc casioned by political factors, al though Police Chief R. R. Hodgkin son of Newport Beach, where the Overell yacht blew up, contended in demanding his replacement that he was not prosecuting the matter with sufficient vigor. Also subpoenaed by the defense is the city editor of the Los Angeles Examiner, James H. Richardson. Letters exchanged in jail between the two defendants, heiress Louise Overell, 18, and her fiance, George Gollum, 21, appeared In the Exam iner shortly after Mr. Howser took over. They subsequently were In troduced in court In slightly abridged fashion. Trial of the two young collegians, accused of murder in the deaths of Miss Overell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Overell, enters its 15th week Tuesday. Montevideo, Uruguay, plans to operate all city transportation lines by 1954.
