t After Dark That Was Labor Day, Wasn’t It, So the Doldrums Must Be Over I I ' By Horry MocArthur Summer, no matter what whim sical turn the weather may take, is done for as far as the night clubs are concerned. Come Labor Day ! and the summer doldrums are over, 'it says here. From now on, all will be beautiful in the bistros. All will be beautiful, that is, until Thanks giving brings the Christmas shop ping doldrums. These end on New Year Eve, to be followed immediate ly by the early January doldrums, caused by people having spent too much money on Christmas. The early January doldrums end about mid-January and things are beautiful again. Until Lent. Night clubbing is what a lot of people give up for Lent, for some reason considering this a sacrifice. After Easter, things are fine again until, of course, warm weather comes along and brings the summer dol drums back. It’s a nice steady busi j ness, running a night club. You can | always look at the calendar and | know to the day when you will again be wishing you had taken up plumb !ing or deep-sea diving or sky-writ ing. With the end of summer on the cabaret calendar, the After Dark scene should begin to show some life. One of the things that will be happening this month is the reopen ing of the Mayflower Lounge, or rather the opening of the new May flower Lounge. The decor of the new Lounge will be different from anything you’ve seen at the May flower before. Among other things there will be a third-dimension mural painted by a French artist, Jean Pajes. It is so realistic that our informant thinks more than one patron will bump his nose against the wall, thinking he is walking into a familiar scene. Entertainment will be by Violinist Florian Zabach and his orchestra and Jeanne Shir ley,. who is billed as “America's Brightest Young Singing Star.” The annual “Champagne and Orchids” event is scheduled for Septem ber 18. » » • » • The night before the Mayflower Lounge opens, September 17 that is, Sam Schanker plans, as previously announced, to reopen his Club Cairo for its second season. Ben Blue, veteran vaudeville comic and fea tured performer in a number of MGM musicals, is the man Mr. Schanker has in mind as the head liner of his opening floor show. And a month after he reopens the Cairo, on October 15 to be exact, Mr. Schanker plans to present the famed “Tragedian of Jazz,” Ted Lewis, to Washington audiences. Other people with whose agents Mr. S. has been dickering, with an eye to showing them off at the Cairo, include Phil Reagan, Carmen Mi randa, Eleanor Powell and Martha Raye. * • • • Other dates on the new season’s calendar: September 15.—Ted Straeter, un less the plans have been changed, brings his orchestra and its highly polished dance music to the Em bassy Room of the Statler Hotel. It will be Ted's fourth return engage ment at the room, he’s that popular. September 6.—Oscar Davis, violin ist. sports writer and at one time fiddler in Dr. Hans Kindler’s Na I tional Symphony, brings his or chestra to the Pall Mall Room of the Raliegh Hotel. September 5.—The Club Bali, un less its plans have been changed, reopens after its short vacation. Lester Young, saxaphonist and be bop expert, will be the stellar at traction. • • • • Dates Unknown: The one when the Shoreham Hotel will open that fancy new room underway out there. The one when Paul .and Dave Young, who sold their Roumanian Inn and Romany Room during the summer, get back on the After Dark scene somewhere as they in evitably must. The current Lotus show is one of the best it has come up with in recent months. It is especially good when Nancy and Michael are at work, the ballet touch they add to their ballroom dancing making that sport the graceful thing it too often isn’t. Nancy Bell is a tap dancer who, as well as being a pretty girl, is the operator of a pair of rhythmic feet; Russ Miller contributes a pleasant novelty turn, with the aid of a pair of talented and personable pups, and Buddy Shaner adds a pair of songs to brighten each session. Straight A grades on this report card. • * » • An occasional spy for this depart ment adds a further clinching proof that one of our favorite clubs not only is not any more, but is not going to be any more. “I was eating in a little restaurant on Thirteenth street the other day,” he told us, ‘'and I suddenly discovered that my spoon, according to the engraving on it, was called ’Troika.’ ” Poppy-seed oil is used as a paint dryer. Tlie defendant, listed as Edward McMenamin, pleaded guilty to a shoplifting charge. A policewoman at the Hecht Co. reported she saw the man pick up four 59-cent foun tain pens from a counter and head for the escalator. About halfway down the escalator the policewoman stopped McMena min and discovered the pens hidden under a book he was carrying in his hand. Twelve additional pens of the same value were later dis covered in his pockets, it was testi fied. Movement of Prowler Reported Play by Play By tho Associated Press | WAUKEGAN, 111.—Police said Mrs. John Johnson reported a prowler entered her back yard and: 1. Stepped on her cat’s tail; 2. Was chased by Rover, her 9 year-old beagle; 3. Tripped over the lawnmower; 4. Sprinted into wire fence; 5. Fell into her rutabaga patch; 6. Bumped into a bean pole, and 7. Finally escaped.
