Britjffi, Inc* I * b * Voice of Americo Probers Get Final Briefing for Flying Trip By tK« Associated Pross Two Senators and six Representa tives get a “final briefing” today for a flying trip to*Europe that will take them to 20 countries in 33 days. The objective of the high-speed swing is an on-the-spot checkup of the State Department s controver sial cultural and information pro gram, with main attention focused on the Voice of America radio broad casts. “We are trying to go too fast on this," Senator Hatch, Democrat, of New Mexico told reporters. “I be lieve we would learn more and do a better Job if we did not cover so much ground.” Senator Hickenlooper, Republican, of Iowa agreed it “will be a quick trip,” but said he hopes to learn “how effective our program is and how it can be improved.” The committee will be made up of five Senators and six House members. The itinerary and time table were mapped by Senator Smith, Repub lican, of New Jersey, and Represen-, tative Mundt, Republican, of South Dakota, heads of their respective delegations. Neither was in Wash ington today. The investigation was ordered by the Senate afer a lengthy Senate House controversy over extending the wartime program into the post war era. Secretary of State Marshall asked Congress for $35,000,000 to tell the United States' story to the rest of the world, but Congress whittled that to $12,400,000. The House first refused any funds on the ground Congress had not specifically author ized such activities. Later Mr. Mundt succeeded in win ning House passage of authoriza tion legislation, but this was stalled in the Senate and the investigation substituted on a last-minute move by Senator Smith. A separate House investigation had been ordered earlier, so it was decided to make the inquiry a joint undertaking. Senator Smith plans to leave to morrow by boat and join the other lawmakers in Berlin. Senator Lodge, Republican, of Massachusetts already is in. Europe and will meet his colleagues there. while Senator Barkley, Democrat, of Kentucky may fly from here later. He has been in Kentucky because of an illness in his family. The trip will be made In an Army plane departing tomorrow. Today's gathering in the House Foreign Af fairs Committee chamber was due to include instructions on how to wear parachutes and how to act if it became necessary to "ditch” the plane at sea. House members expected to make the trip include Representatives Mundt, Judd, Republican, of Min nesota; Smith, Republican, of Wis consin; Jarman, Democrat, of Ala bama; Gordon, Democrat, of Illi nois and Mansfield, Democrat, of Montana. Each lawmaker has been provided with a special questionnaire to be filled out in each of the countries visited after a talk there with Americans and citizens of the na tion. Visits have been arranged by the State Department in England, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg. Belgium, Holland, Norway, Den mark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Portugal.
