Abnormal Teeth Held To Have Impaired Hearing of 4 Million By tht Associated Press CHICAGO, Sept. 5.—Evidence that abnormal teeth have Impaired the hearing of possibly 4,000,000 Amer icans was reported by a dentist yes terday. Dr. David J. Goodfriend of Phila delphia said field workers had estab lished the role of abnormalities of dental bite in producing certain hearing troubles "as thoroughly as Koch proved that the tubercle bacillus causes tuberculosis.” Writing in the Archives of Otolaryngology, publication of the American Medical Association, Dr. Goodfriend said anatomical studies showed any abnormality of dental bite directly affects the eustachian tube. This tube brings about com munication between the middle ear and the pharynx by adjusting air pressure in the middle ear to that of of the air outside. Some 10,000,000 Americans are suffering from deafness or impaired hearing, he said, adding that ab normal dental bite "probably in fluences about 40 per cent of all deafness.” Dr. Goodfriend, reporting on studies carried out in the depart ment of dentistry, medicine and psychology of the University of Pennsylvania, found: That at the university’s special ear and throat clinic, 23 of the first 25 patients with hearing complaints but without any abnormalities in the ear itself showed abnormalities of bite, or some position of the teeth which interfered with proper move ments of the jaws in chewing. That studies of a group of 168 dental students showed 55 per cent had dental malocclusions. The hear ing of the group with an abnormal bite was 13 per cent less than that of the other students. The keynote of the work is preven tion, Dr. Goodfriend said. Results depend in large measure on how long the hearing has been disturbed, he added. Safety Council Urges Stricter Licensing to Reduce Auto Deaths CHICAGO, Sept. 5 (NANA).— Automobile fatalities during the Labor Day week end reached a total of 293—43 more than was anticipated by the National Safety Council. The council is alarmed at this rising trend because the most hazardous driving period of the year lies ahead. In a statement here, Sidney J. Williams, director of public safety of the National Safety Council, de clared that this upward swing in traffic deaths must be halted. “Good driver's license laws, prop erly administered,” said Mr. Wil liams, “can reduce traffic accidents by 20 cent or more. Such laws are the most effective method of elimi nating bad driving from the high ways because the average driver fears the loss of his license more than any other punishment. "An effective licensing system must be instituted in the various States to include: The careful examination of all applicants on highway regula 'tions and a driving test given by a trained examiner with sufficient time to test each driver thoroughly;; and the suspension or revocation of a license whenever the driver’s rec ord of accidents or violations, checked by interview and re-ex amination, shows him to be reckless or incompetent. "Only a few States have come any where near making full use of these measures,” Mr. Williams stated. "Many motor vehicle commissioners who would like to do a better job are handicapped by lack of funds, political pressure, or the absence of the merit system for examiners and other employes. "The National Safety Council strongly supports the efforts of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, and the rec ommendations of the President’s re cent highway safety conference for the passage of adequate license laws in all States not already having them.” Philippines Close to Asia Y’Ami Island, the northernmost point of the Philippine Archipelago, is 78 miles from Formosa.
