One of the arguments advanced by tournament players against tfid use of an artificial four no-trunQji convention in slam bidding, is th^tj it frequently deprives the player of the privilege of using the four nfe4 trump bid in its natural common sense meaning. In other words, there are some hands which cannit quite reach a slam, and when fact is definitely determined, it m$y become desirable to play thOSd hands at no-trump. Another objection sometimes raised is one based on psychological con4 siderations. Once a Dlaver becomes addicted to its use, its evils are a$ difficult to check as those that beset the drug addict. With some players, all consideration of trump support of the proper place to play the hand are forgotten in the quest for romance which the bid of four no-trump seems to provide. Sight is frequently lost of the paramount consideration that only on hands that are quite safe for 11 tricks should the conven tion be employed. Today's hand is an interesting il lustration of the use of the four no trump bid in its plain common serose meaning. After the opening bid Of one spade. North bides his time with a bid of two clubs to await develop ments, but on the next round makes a jump rebid to be sure the bidding will not die. At this point. South could naturally bid five clubs, but He can make a much more enlightening bid, namely, four no-trump. This should indicate to partner that he is unable to rebid either of his sufts, and also that he has a high diamond stopper, which, and this is the im portant point, is not the ace, else would have been his privilege to bid four diamonds at this time. As far as North is concerned, this bid marks South with the king of diamonds and he is now reasonably safe in bidding a slam in clubs. NdU that if North had not held the queip of diamonds, there would be dangyr of losing two tricks in the suit, and he could, therefore, elect to pernflt partner to play the hand at ift trump in order to prevent a possible diamond lead through his partner* king. Note also that had South held the king of hearts instead of the king of diamonds, he would have had the same number of aces and kings, yet a slam would have been unf makable. Five clubs would have then been the correct bid. (Copyright, 194t, by Charles H. Ooren.) Take My Word for ft By Frank Colby Saturday Mailbag. 1 ■ Shreveport; Please give the cor* rect pronunciation of the name Louisiana.—W. B. J. , : Answer; According to the dic tionaries and gazetteers it's: loo-EES zee-AN'uh. It must be noted, how ever (as I have personally observed"!, that large numbers of citizens of the State say: LOO-zee-AN’-uh. If that pronunciation prevails in the Pelican State, it, too, must be acj cepted as good usage. • Kansas City: A young man workf ing in our store maintains that rl> ‘‘ain’t” is not in the dictionary; (S) English is a romance language. He is incorrect, isn’t he?—B D. •'* • Answer: Yes, on both county. “Ain’t” is in most dictionaries but it is labeled “dialectal or illiterate).” English contains many words of romance origin (French and Latini, but its grammatical structure atd basic vocabulary are Germanifc (Anglo-Saxon). English is not one of the romance languages, which are: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian. Altadena: Do continue from time to time to stress the correct prof nunciations of “accompanist” and “chaise longue.”—M. F. S. Answer: Accompanist Is often given an erroneous extra syllable, a£ “uh-KUM-pan-ee-ist,” as if the word were formed by adding -1st id the word accompany. But accom panist should have four syllable* only, thus: uh-KUM-puh-nist. As for chaise longue, there is littty hope that American eyes can be taught to “see" the second word as “longue” instead of “lounge.” Th£ correct English pronunciation of chaise longue (chair long) is: shayz long. - However, the association with a lounge is so strong that even in the furniture industry itself the pro nunciation “lounge” for "longue”.ty all but universal. I am glad to see that furniture companies are fal lowing my recent suggestion and are abandoning the word “longue” alto* gether in their advertising, using instead the spelling “chaise lounge.’* Of course, this results in a hybrid phrase half French (chaise) and half English (lounge): but that is nothing unusual in our composite language, ana n aoes nave ura virtue of making the spelling corrfet spond with the "lounge” pronunci*-) tion. : j (Copyright. 1(147. the Bell Syndicate, life * Mind Meter THE TRUE-FALSE TEST.
