Bible Class Leaders H. A. Magnuson Uses Songs In Teaching Bible Class Efforts to make the song-service part of the Bible class session more interesting and effective occupies the time of Henry A. Magnuson of the Silver Spring Baptist Church. "There is a fine spot for song leaders to work with the teacher of a class in playing up a coming event or stressing a main fpfltllvp nf tbp lesson,” Mr Mag nuson said. One of the ways Mr Mag nuson, who has been working with church H A- M»*nu»on. choirs ior 10 years, proceeds in try ing to put across his program is by having the song leaders meet as a group. The aim is to develop a uni fiedmethod of song leading in the classes. There are three important steps to be t.aken in this connection, Mr. Magnukm explained. First i's to j teach how to direct witn tne nand.s 1 to keep the tempo of a song moving steadily. Second is to bring out more interpretation by the group |when singing; and third is a con ! stant check on the song leaders j themselves as to the effectiveness I of their methods. At the Silver Spring church, Mr. Magnuson, who has been active i there in this work for four years, uses “songalogues” with the chil dren's group. He draws ideas of the song on the blackboard as the j children sing. The ideas of such hymns as “The Old Rugged Cross" become clearer to them through this method, he believes. Mr. Magnuson, a veteran of the | First World War, came to Wash ington in 1929. He is now with the i War Assets Administration as a real property disposal officer. Be fore the war he was with the De partment of Agriculture as an archi tect. He joined the National Baptist Memorial Church on first coming to Washington. The gas rationing problem during the war resulted in his transferring his membership to the Silver Spring church in 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Magnuson live at 1109 Wayne avenue, Silver Spring. They have two children, Henry A. Magnuson, jr., 19, and Lorraine, 13. Former Pastor Guest At National Christian Dr. Raphael Harwood Miller, for mer minister of the National City Christian Church, will occupy the pulpit Sunday morning, speaking on "Power and Light.” Dr. Miller was a prominent leader in church and civic affairs in Washington from 1933 to 1941. He left here to become editor of "The Christain-Evangelist,” the national magazine of the Disciples of Christ. Dr. J. Warren Hastings, minister, will return from his vacation at Bethany Beach, Del., in time to participate in the service. evangelist Appleman To Conduct Revival Dr. Hyman J. Appelman, prom nent evangelist, will open a two week revival beginning September 22 In the Metropolitan Baptist Church. Special mass meetings will be held September 28 in Constitu tion Hall at 3 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The closing mass rally will be held in the Uline Arena on October 5 at 3 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. This cam paign is being sponsored by 30 of the outstanding fundamental churches in conjunction with other Christian organizations. Because they have a definite standard and ob jective, they really get somewhere in influencing the minds and the characters of their participants, as they discuss the life of today in the light of Holy Writ. It is this Bible based factor which gives all Sun day school teaching its unique power. Prom every point on the horizon come voices of statesmen and scholars and publicists and men of affairs, proclaiming that only re ligion can save civilization. God wants everybody to be saved, but many will fall short—wiII be lost. Some of these will be lost as a result of the conflicting voices of ecclesiasticism. They are honest, sincere, seeking folk; but creeds, churches and preachers hove led them to a state of spiritual confusion. They go to one church and are told one thing, and to another preacher with another creed and are told something else. So they quit in dispair. Division among the ones who profess to follow the Lord is responsible. Man is responsible for division, hence man is responsible for other men being lost. I here is one way to avoid this mental dispair and spiritual confusion: follow the teaching of the New Testament without the help of man. The New Testament is the perfect creed. It tells us what people did to be saved (See Acts 2, 8, 9, 10, 16); and if people today will do as those did about whom we can read in the above chapters, they will be saved the same way. Denominational ism is the product of man and will be destroyed (Matt. 15: 13, 14). Follow Christ as taught in the New Testament and be saved. ALEXANDRIA, VA.
