The faultless dummy technique which is an outstanding characteris tic of B. J. Becker's game, was much in evidence during the play of today's hand, taken from an early round of I the worlds championship masters j team-of-four event recently won by the team composed of Helen Sobei Mr. Becker, Waldemar Von Zedwitz, -v. **wu jum icpui ier. The bidding herein recorded is the (sequence adopted at our table, where [Becker, my partner at the time, sat I North. In preference to the orthodox bid of one spade, I chose to open with one club, a procedure with which some players will take issue. I felt that the bidding could be man aged more easily if partner were afforded the opportunity to respond j at tlle 'evel of one. My partner, with perfect grace and in good tradition, responded with one spade. This, in the big leagues is known as a "Becker response.” In addition to his many fine qualities, Mr. Becker has the j secret knack of almost invariably re sponding in the opener's best suit. In order to make an earlv slam try, ;1 mac*e a jump shift in the only suit ; available for the purpose, and after ;the hearts were shown, I leaped to four spades. This in view of my previous activity was a distinct over bid, but I risked such action because I felt it would be desirable to allav any apprehensions Becker might i have about the complexion of the trump suit. We promptly contracted for slam. The six of diamonds was opened. Three rounds of trumps were drawn, declarer winding up in his own hand! The remaining diamond was ruffed in dummy, eliminating that suit. A low club was then led to the king, and on the return, Mr. Becker re fused the finesse, though normally such play is against percentages with only eight of the suit. His reasoning was neat. If East held three clubs to the queen, he was perfectly wel come to the trick, since when he won that trick, he would have to return a heart, giving declarer the finesse, or a diamond, which would permit a discard of a heart out of the South hand. When the queen of clubs fell-, Mr. Becker could now afford the luxury of the heart finesse. When it succeeded, he called me sharply to task for not having bid with suffi When our adversaries held this hand, they bid to seven spades. In j that case, the heart, finesse became I obligatory. When It held, declarer had then to guess the location of the club queen. With all the tricks required, there was no safe way to play the hand, and when North mls guessed by finessing into West, the contract was defeated a trick. (Copyright, 1947. by Charles H. Goren.) Take My Word for It By Frank Colby What Is the Origin? Q. Common usage favor* “all told" in such sentences as “there were 150 members present, all told.” I am of the opinion that the cor rect phrase should be "all tolled." i What is your verdict on this?— C. L. S. A- I'm sorry that I must dis ! approve of “all tolled.” That “all told” Is the correct expression is seen by looking into the origin of the word tell. It is from the Anglo-Saxon tellen, mean ing "to count.” Therefore, "all told” means "all counted.” This old meaning of the verb to ; j tell is still used in banking, for a i teller is primarily a counter of ! money. Also, among Roman Cath olics, it is customary to "tell" : (count) one's beads (of the rosary i. i j Tell for "count" is often seen in ithe Bible and in Shakespeare: "He ; telleth (counteth) the number of . the stars.”—Psalms. “While one with moderate haste might tell 'j (count) a hundred.”—Hamlet. Now let us look at “all tolled.” : There are two “tolls" in English: 'j < 1) a tax; (2) to draw cm- pull. Hence, we speak of a toll bridge, a toll road, a tollgate, etc. W* also ! speak of the tolling of a bell, that | is, the striking of a bell by means Ui jJUllliiK VXX LXXC xupc. In neither of these ‘‘tolls” Is there any meaning that could be applied to "all tolled.” Therefore, j “tolled” is an incorrect form. Q. My friend and I do not agree on the meaning of "mediocre.” Is he right in holding that it means “average in quality or ability”? —R. J. M. A. As the word is used today, it means “indifferent; second-rate; poor; below average.” We bor rowed the word from the French who pronounce It; may-dee-AW kruh. The English pronunciation is; MEE-dee-OH-ker. Mediocre entered French from the Latin mediocris, "In a middle state between too much and too little.” However, this Is really a figurative meaning, for mediocris is formed from medius, “middle," plus ocrls, “a broken, rugged, stony mountain.” Strictly speaking, then, a mediocre person is one who is halfway up a mountain.
