Few Enter Training
To Fill Hospital Need
For Practical Nurses
By Thomas G. Buchanan
With hospitals clamoring for more
practical nurses to provide patients
with the bedside care, only 29 stu
dents have reported this fall to
white nursing schools and 195 can
didates to the only colored institu
| tion.
The scarcity of applicants for
practical nurse training is in sharp
contrast to the markedly heavier j
enrollment in all local hospitals op
erating three-year courses for grad
uate nurses.
Hardest hit by the lagging interestj
in the lower-paid branch of nursing i
is Doctors Hospital, which last year
pioneered among local hospitals in |
introducing a one-year course for
practical nurses.
For Doctors third nursing class,
which begins October 1, there have
been only 15 candidates accepted
so far, out of 30 applicants. The
reoruary class naa drawn t>u appli
cations, and 36 were accepted.
Puzzled by Lack of Quota.
Authorities at the hospital have
hoped for an equal number this fall
and are puzzled by the failure to
fill their class. The hospital gives
its students free tuition, books, uni
forms, laundry and meals, plus an
allowance of $600.
At the Burdick Vocational School,
enrollment is up from 10 last fall
to 14 this year, with three more
applications yet to be studied.
The handful of students is neg- j
ligible. however, when it is con- j
sidered that Gallinger, Episcopal,
Casualty, Providence and Homeo
pathic Hospitals have agreed to take
the students after they have had
some academic training for further
practical study of actual patient
care.
Burdick authorities say they could
take about 35 students with present a
facilities. The school has only one
full time practical nursing instruc
tor.
School officials say they do not

candidates until the District passes
a law requiring minimum standards
I of training of all who practice the
| nursing profession. At present,
practical nurses are unlicensed.
195 at Washington Vocational.
The only real progress in practical
nurse training is talcing place at
the Washington Vocational School,
where enrollment of colored stu
dents is up 25 per cent from last
year's 156. Of this year’s students,
70 are day pupils and 125 attend
night classes.
Ggllinger already is training 18
graduates of last year’s vocational
course at the Washington School.
They are given five months’ ward
training at the municipal hospital
after completing their academic
work. After this practical training,
they will be eligible for jobs at
Gallinger, Freedmen's or St. Eliza
beths Hospital.
The Washington school has four
full time instructors for its evening
nursing classes and two for the day
course. Day students require two
semesters to complete their training,
while night students normally finish
in three semesters.
Upper Marlboro Fire
Seen by Noon Crowd
A fire in the basement of the law
office of Attorney Frank M. Hall
and George T. Burroughs, of Upper
Marlboro caused minor excitement
during the lunch hour yesterday
in the Prince Georges County seat.
The blaze, which sent black smoke
billowing in the air, was confined
to a concrete-walled room contain
ing an oil heater for the building.
Two fire trucks of the Upper Marl- j
boro Volunteer Fire Department,!
which responded to the alarm, |
quickly extinguished the flames. j
The fire started when sparks, from
the heater ignited the oil.
The building is located on the
main street, opposite the County;
Courthouse.
