Life to Ancient Law To Be Buried Today Funeral services for Rabbi Abba Silverman, 67, a Washington resi dent who failed as an inventor, a farmer and a businessman before finding happiness in a life com pletely devoted to strict living ac cording to ancient Hebrew law, were to be held at 3 p.m. today. The services for Rabbi Silverman, who died Tuesday at George Wash ington University Hospital a few hours before the solemn chanting of Kol Nidre ushered in the holy Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, wdil be held at the Goldberg funeral home, 4217 Ninth street N.W. Rab bi Solomon H. Metz of the Adas Israel Congregation and Rabbi Zemach Green of Ohev Sholom Congregation, wiU officiate. Burial will be in Adas Israel Cemetery, where the religious leader, who had no congregation but belonged to the sacrificing Shomrei Shabbos Order, will be buried next to his wife Ethel, who died in 1944, and his son Stephen, who died in 1936. Remained in Seclusion. A resident of the Washington area for the last 40 years, Rabbi Silverman joined the Shomrei Shab bos order about 20 years ago. Since then he had remained practically in seclusion, studying ancient Jewish manuscripts and writing treatises on his religion. He lived at 725 Rittenhouse street N.W. Child of Russian parents, he was forced to flee his native land w'hen his parents and relatives all were slain during a po^-om. He then settled in Washington with his bride. For some time he attempted to make his living as an inventor but met with little success in marketing ms devices. According to his fam ily. he developed the first working clothes line pulley, but realized little profit from it because of his lack of acumen as a businessman. Moved to Farm. After a few years of living in pov erty here, he moved to a small farm in Prince Georges County, in an area now known as Chillum Heights. He returned to Washington with his family when an attack of polio struck one of his two sons shortly after World War I. He then en tered business as a salesman for a wholesale drygoods company, and later went into the same business for himself. According to his family, he at one time owned three such stores, but was completely wiped out after a series of unfortunate business ven tures. Efhbittered by his failure, he re solved to devote his life to religion. He studied for a time at a Hebrew school in New York and then re turned here, where he practiced a life of discipline regimented bv the teachings of the ancient Jewish prophets. Gave All to Charity. Every cent of his meager income, his family said, was given to charity. In addition to his work among the poor here, he sent two boys through divinity school. His family said his greatest wish was to live the last days of his life in the Holy Land, and to be buried in Palestine. With that in mind, he had purchased a small house in Tel Aviv, paying for it with small, carefully- hoarded monthly sums. When the bitter strife in the Holy Land flamed to new intensity sev eral years ago, he donated the house me mavui 01 me town 10 oe used to house homeless fugitive Jews. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bose Milstein. Mrs. Sarah Seigel and Mrs. Lena Rolins, all of the Washington area; a son. Julius Silverman, Detroit; a brother. Isaac Silverman, Washington, and seven grandchildren. Rites at Fort Myer For Lt. Barrett, superin tendent of police, will be asked to explain why a 64-year-old grand mother was taken to the 9th precinct Saturday night in a police patrol wagon because she was un able to convince two foot patrolmen she was not "lost and confused.’’ Mis. Cecil E. Rhodes, 2408 Thir tieth street N.E., said her mother, ivii s. iMva juavis, is an arthritic— which affects her gait—and suffers from a nervous impediment of speech. Mrs. Rhodes said she will lodge her complaint with Maj. Bar rett becayse she considers that her mother was “humiliated" by the l ido from a bus stop at Thirteenth and H streets N.E. to the police sta tion in the patrol wagon. C&pt. John J. Jeffries of the 9th precinct said it was customary for foot patrolmen to call for the patrol wagon to take persons to the precinct station. If a scout car had been involved in the incident, Mrs. Davis would have been driven to the station in it. But a patrol man has no other means of trans portation, he added. Was Waiting for Bus. Mrs. Davis had been to a nearby motion picture theater and was w’aiting for a bus when Policemen Henry J. Peterson and Walter F. Shepherd noticed her. The account of the incident given by Capt. Jefferies, after an investi gation, differs with what Mrs. Davis says happened. ' Mrs. Davis, a w’idow, said she W'atched the tw!o policemen trying to arrest a drunk. The policemen had called for the wagon from an ad jacent patrol box, Mrs. Davis told her daughter, but while waiting for it to arrive, the prisoner broke away and escaped. Then, Mrs. Davis declared, the policemen approached her and “hustled” her into the wagon and off to the precinct station. Capt. Jefferies said Pvts. Peterson and Shepherd did not call the patrol WflPnn for annthof nriermor 'T'U were walking their beat, Capt. Jef feries said, when they approached Mrs. Davis at the bus stop because she appeared confused. They were unable to understand Mrs. Davis’ at tempt to give her name and address, he said, and decided to “bring her in for her own protection.” They then called for the wagon, he said. Drunk Man Reported. While waiting for the wagon. Capt. Jeffries said, some one told the policeman that a man was lying drunk in a nearby doorwoy. Pvt. Shepherd shook the man, Capt. Jeffries said and found that he was asleep but not drunk. He was sent on his way. At the station house, Corpl. Dewey H. Mayer took charge of Mrs. Davis. Finally, by getting Mrs. Davis to write her address and telephone number, Corpl. Mayo was able to contact the family. Corpl. Mayo asked Mrs. Rhodes on the phone what he should do, Capt. Jeffries said, and was told to put Mrs. Davis in a cab and send her home. That was done. Capt. Jeffries emphasized that Mrs. Davis was not under arrest, merely in custody for her own protection “as is often done when old women and children are found on the street Tate at night.” Odenton Fanner Is Held In Wife's Death in Well By the Associated Press FERNDALE, Md..
