Ormosite Woodward and Lothron 4 L======== A Small Deposit Reserves Your Selectionist Reilly Says Bankers Will Triple Loans in Competitive Economy Banks will make three times as many loans during the “coming i competitive economy” as they did ! before the war, but the risks will be correspondingly great and will demand closer attention to credit principles, John A. Reilly, president of the Washington Board of Trade, told the Junior Board of Commerce yesterday. Mr. Reilly, who is president of the Second National Bank, declared at the board’s luncheon in the Burling ton Hotel that the capitalistic sys tem can survive in the United States only if management, labor and gov ernment "subordinate selfish ad | vantages." He attacked "proponents of eco nomic security rather than equality of opportunity.” They are “intellec tually dishonest” when they decry the “profit system” but fail to men tion that such a system is "neces sarily one of profit and loss,” he said. “Since 1933 we have had a sub sidized economy,” he explained. “Now we are going into & free en terprise, competitive economy. Of course, banks prospered during the war. It was hard for a banker to make a mistake in granting credit with Uncle Sam as the principal customer. But banking will be dif ferent from now on. Credit grant ing, especially the elements of char acter, capital and capacity, must command our attention much more as the pendulum swings back to the coming competitive economy.” Mr. Reilly called for a closer re lationship between bankers and businessmen generally. He said he hoped that "any unfortunate ex perience any of you may have had with some banker will not lead you | to advocate Government controls.” Bids on Navy Project Asked The officer in charge of naval construction in the Potomac River area today called for bids for in stalling air conditioning in the ad ministration and instruction bulki ng of the Naval Air Station at Ana costia.
