Father—I'll give you just one min
ute in which to make your choice—
whether you'll be pleasant and stay
at the table with us or go to your

Father—Please take that scowl off
your face and be daddy's sweet girl—
won't you, honey? It makes mother

The suggested bidding:
South West North East
Opening lead, king of clubs.
Bidding at contract is neither more
nor less than a natural conversation
in code employing as characters,
seven numbers, four suits, no-trump,
pass, double and redouble. The per
mutations and combinations of these
15 symbols form a language of great
richness and permit the exchange of
messages that are sometimes very
exact and frequently quite sutble.
The decoding of some of the mes
sages, such as the opening two bid
and the takeout double, depend en
tirely on conversational agreement:
most of the others can be dechlph
ered in a cool, logical manner.
In today's hand, the key to the
slam was North's possession of a sin
gleton club. It was North's place to
bring to the attention of his partner
this important bit of information
without which South, holding three
losing clubs, could not embark upon
a slam. There are, of course, numer
ous artificial devices for checking on
aces and kings., but many players are
inclined to overlook the importance
of checking on equally vital matters

such as singletons.
Some time ago I presented *
method for identifying a singleton,
a method that is based on logic
rather than arbitrary convention. It
is this: When a player names three
suits and includes a jump in his
sequence of bids, he shows a single
ton or void in the fourth suit.
When the hand was actually
played, South did not rise to the oc
casion. He opened with one heart
and North marked time with a two
diamond response. South's rebid of
two hearts is a forced underbid, no
other call being suitable. The hand
is distinctly short of the require
ments for a jump rebid. North's
two-spade bid was another force,
and again left South with no ade
quate rebid. Without clubs he could
not try no-trump, so he decided to
return to three diamonds, convinced
that North would take further action.
North now leaped to four hearts and
South, concerned about the clubs,
thoughtlessly passed. North having
named two suits of his own, and
jumped in the third marked himself
«1th no more than a singleton in
the fourth suit.
The question may be raised as to
responder's procedure, holding a
strong hand with two suits, trump
support, and a doubleton in the
fourth suit. In such case he should
either show one suit and jump, or
two suits and raise without a jump.

Take My Word for It
By Frank Colby
THE INFINITE ARTICLES.
One oi the stubbornest dlehards
is the superstition that It le best
usage to use the Indefinite article
"an" before such words aa histori
cal, heroic, hysterical, etc. A New
York wordman recently wrote to
urge me to "make an heroic effort
to Impress on people than *an,'
and not 'a,' should be used before
words beginning with 'h' and
which are accented on the second
syllable."
Such usage, it must be pointed out,
is obsolescent In America, although
more or less customary in England
where the Initial "h" is tradition
ally slighted or dropped altogether,
hence, an 'istorian, an 'otel. etc.
Here are the simple rules for using
I the indefinite articles:
1. Use "a" before words which
start with a. consonant sound : A
man, a rock, a house, a union (union
starts with the sound of the con
sonant "y," as: Yoon-yun), a his
torian, a hotel.
2. Use "an" before words which
start with a vowel sound: An em
pire. an ocean, an island, an honor
(since the "h" of honor is silent,
the word starts with the sound of
the vowel "o," as: On-or), an um
brella.
Mr. Colby has , written a very helpful
leaflet. C-3. which will teach you the cor
rect pronunciation for 100 words η ost
frequently mispronounced. "Ip obtain »
