S. R. Martin & Company Exclusive Realtors 2645 Conn. Ave. DU. 5366 Use of Turbo-Props May Mean 400 M.P.H. Speeds for Airlines LONDON, Oct. 4 < Ν AN A).—The annual exhibition of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors shows that Britain's big land aircraft, now in final assembly, will be able to rely ori turbo-prope when they are needed. The first version of the Bristol Brabazon I, a 130-ton plane, will have eight piston engines, .but the second will have Theseus gas tur bines driving its propellers. The turbo-prop is expected to bring with it the era in which air liners will regularly fly at speeds well above 300 m.p.h. and gives promise of new liners with speeds above 400 m.p.h. The turbine has been seen in flight, fitted in a bomber which ought to have a range of 3,000 miles, and this would seem to answer critics who have doubted the value of the gas turbine in ocean flying. There seems every reason now to expect that the gas turbine will find a large application in long-range flying. Another turbo-prop combination of greater power is specified for the 130-ton civil flying-boat which is j being built by Saunders-Roe and 'there are other less ambitious proj ects. The assumption that the gas turbine would use too much fuel for long-range commercial flying is likely to prove unjustified. The low drag of the gas turbine as compared with the piston engine is expected to give improved performance and British experiments suggest that, when judged on the basis of miles j per gallon, the turbo-prop will actu ; ally show a greater economy than : the piston engine. Liquor License Application By Deane Firm Denied The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board today denied the application of Deane Liquors, Inc., for a liquor license at 1013 Kenilworth avenue N.E., because the majority of resi dents of that area protested. The board also took into con sideration the nearness of Eastland ; Gardens and Mayfalr Mansions, two apartment developments. The Deane company sought to transfer to their name and to the Kenilworth avenue address the license held by Samuel Walkin at 2406 Fourteenth street N.W. Home and Acreage 8 mi. from D. C. VOLKMAN Evet. and Sun., WO. 1394 EM. 4949 L Fulton Lewis Decides To Sue Over Dismissal By Farm Co-operative Fulton Lewis, jr., radio commen tator dismissed from membership in the Southern States Co-operative, farmers' organization, said today he has decided to appeal the action to the State courts. Dismissal of Mr. Lewis, owner of a 250-acre farm near Leonardtown, Md., came after a day-long session yesterday in Richmond of the 14 member board of the organization. •Charging him with "lack of sym pathy with the objectives of the farmers" the co-operative asserted Mr. Lewis had embarked on a ' propaganda campaign" designed to "mislead the public into believing that farmer co-operatives are social istic, if not communistic, and are tax dodgers." The commentator, who appeared at the sessions in Richmond with his attorneys, claimed he "had no rea sonable opportunity to defend him self." He called the meeting "a star chamber proceeding, a drumhead :ourt-martial, with unsubstantial ac cusations, without support in proof and fact." Declining an appeal to the co operative's annual membership meeting in Richmond November 10, I Mr. Lewis said he would take his case to court. j The board's unanimous decision was announced by Harry N. Nuttle of Denton, Md., president of Southern States. Other members of the board represent farmers in Virginia, Dela ware, Kentucky and West Virginia $3,269 Payroll Seized In Baltimore Holdup By th· Associated Prjss BALTIMORE, Oct. 4.—Police in 19 States were on the lookout today for the getaway vehicle of an armed bandit who took a $3.269.10 payroll from a contracting firm here yes terday. Witnesses told police two men were occupying the front seat of the car, a green sedan with Virginia tags, when the holdup man ran out of the offices of Mechanical Contractors, Inc., and jumped into the vehicle. Miss Charlotte Ehrman, an em ploye of the firm, said the robber followed her into the building when she brought the payroll from the bank at noon. She said he drew a pistol and said: "Stand still! When I leave don't go near that window to shout or look out or I will shoot you from the street." Only other person in the building was Mrs. Doris Coleman, another employe. The bandit was described as about 35 and wearing a black and white checkered sport coat and a jockey cap. , OPEN SUNDAY, 11:00 to 6:00 310 Kentucky Ave., Alexandria Owner built and occupied, this splendid prewar house of stone and brick is well planned and immaculate.
