C., Oct. fi.—A man questioned in a "lovers' lane" slay ing blew his head off with a shotgun early today while 200 officers and ievcial hundred citizens assembled nearby, Sheriff William H. Peden reported. Sheriff Peden said Dave Dunham. 32, colored, a farmer, "undoubtedly" was the assailant who beat to deatn Clarence Wallis, 22-year-old war veteran, last night. Mr. Wallis was slain while he fought to permit the escape of his attractive girl friend. Betsy Ross, from a man who had accosted them ! on a secluded road, Sheriff Peden 1 said. Dragged Girl From Car. The sheriff said the attacker stiuck Mr. Wallis a terrific blow on ' the her.d and then dragged the girl from the car by the throat. Senator Maybank's Wife Dies of Long illness PLAT ROCK, N. C., Oct. 6 —Eliza beth Myers Maybank, wife of Sena tor Maybank, Democrat, of South Caroline, died yesterday after an extended illness. Mrs. Maybanks had been ill for several months and was confined in a Philadelphia hospital until re cently when she came here for the marriage of her daughter. The Maybanks have three chil dren, Burnet, jr., Roberta and Eliza beth. Senator Maybank was first elected to the Senate in 1941 .to finish the unexpired term of James F. Mr. Tomlin was born in Alex andria, the son of the late William Olancer Tomlin and Josephine Fones Tomlin. He was graduated from Georee Washineton Hieh School in Alexandria and received his law degree from Georgetown ι University. Oct. 6. —The career of Harry T. Dewhirst. under whose - leadership the famed House of David religious colony grew into a $l,000,000-a-year busi ness, was ended yesterday by death. Mr. Dewhirst. 66. died of a heart ailment and chronic diabetes. A former justice of the California Superior Court, he had headed the House of David since the death of King" Benjamin Purnell in 1927. The sect split into two factions in 1930. with Mr. Purnell* widow. Mary, heading one colony known as 'Mary's City of David." Mr. Dew hirst became chief of the original suit and set out to expand its busi ness operations. The colony, under his direction, ran an amusement park, one of the largest cold storage plants in the «'orld, several farms in this area, and hotels in Michigan and Texas. One of its best known assets was the "House of David" baseball team, all of whose players wore long, flow ing beards. Most of the activities still are under House of David ownership.
