'Lovers' Lane' Slaying
ly th· Associated Press
CHESTER. S. C., Oct. fi.—A man
questioned in a "lovers' lane" slay
ing blew his head off with a shotgun
early today while 200 officers and
ievcial hundred citizens assembled
nearby, Sheriff William H. Peden
reported.
Sheriff Peden said Dave Dunham.
32, colored, a farmer, "undoubtedly"
was the assailant who beat to deatn

Mr. Wallis was slain while he
fought to permit the escape of his
attractive girl friend. Betsy Ross,
from a man who had accosted them
! on a secluded road, Sheriff Peden
1 said.
Dragged Girl From Car.
The sheriff said the attacker
stiuck Mr. Wallis a terrific blow on
' the her.d and then dragged the
girl from the car by the throat.
Mr. Wallis recovered sufficiently to
grapple with the attacker after
shouting tc the girl to 'run," the
sheriff related.
He said Miss Ross was hysterical

About 200 State, county and city

Chandler and Lt. John Latimore
qiiietly called at the home of Dun-'

man about last night's slaying, the
chief reported, Dunham ran from
his house and seized a shotgun.
As the officers prepared to close !

The chief said he found bloody

"definite proof" that Dunham was
the man who attacked the couple.
