Switzerland, Oct. 27.— Leon De Rosen, French delegate, told the interim commission of the International Refugee Organization today its employes were drawing excessive, tax-exempt salaries while refugees were being denied care and ! maintenance. He said the salaries averaged $4,000 a year, better pay than French ministers receive. Mr. De Rosen criticized the organization's budget providing $10,000,000 for personal services and a reserve fund of $1, 000.000 for paying taxes of employes where governments declined to waive. The French critic said the interim commission’s payroll of 5,837 em ployes was top heavy. Hau Cheng Wang, Chinese dele gate, said maintenance of some ref ugees was costing too much. William Hallam Tuck, executive secretary, and hjs deputy urged gov ernments to pay their assesments, to fix a deadline against acceptance of new refugees and to make ad vances beyond the assesments fixed for the year ending next Juhe 30; George L. Warren, the United States delegate, said last week that unless the interim commission "convinc ingly answered the challenge," he could guarantee no further United States contribution. The commis sion has a $7,000,000 deficit. Illinois Town's Largest Funeral Held for Ambushed Ex-Ganaster By the Associated Press FAIRFIELD. 111., Oct. 27.—All the customary splendor of underworld pomp marked the funeral services yesterday for Carl Shelton, 59. former Southern Illinois gang leader who was slain from ambush last Thursday. More than 1.000 persons crowded into the First Methodist Church here for the rite* which long-time residents described as the largest funeral the community has ever seen. Hundreds of other persons were unable to get into the edifice. Hundreds of floral pieces, many costing as much as $100 each, were banked along the front of the church, almost obscuring the one time gangster's $2,500 bronze casket from the view of the congregation. One of the two florists in this town of 4,000 said it was impossible to fill all the flower orders by mer chants, friends of the fajnily and Shelton's former pals. Despite a drizzling rain which fell throughout the services, more than 80 automobiles were in the funeral procession. Shelton, who in recent years had been known as a farmer and busi ness man, was machine-gunned by five men as he drove toward Fair field from his country home in a jeep. He was shot 16 times as he ran from the jeep toward cover. No arrests have been made. A coroner’s inquest is set for tomor row. fPLAsTlCn ■j j LEATHERETTE j For All Types of i | Upholstering I SAVARESE FABRICS, Ins. j | 1319 14th St. N.W. Ml. 7171 \ Tax Cut Would Check Inflation, Shreve Says. By th# Assoc ed Pres* The argument that Federal tax reduction would lead to checking inflation, rather than increasing it, was advanced today by Earl O. Shreve, president of the United States Chamber of Commerce. "I am convinced there would be infinitely greater assurance of pro duction volume sufficient to check inflation if taxes .were reduced,” he said. The statement urged a reduction “at the coming session of Congress.” A chamber official told a reporter it was prepared before the special session was called for November 17 and was directed at the regular ses sion in January. Mr. Shreve said opposition to tax reduction “comes chiefly from those desiring continuance of liberal (Government) spending programs.” Actually, he argued, the results of tax reduction would be: “Increased revenues for the Treasury—more and lower-priced goods for consumers—more jobs in industry—sounder and more endur ing prosperity.” In calling for general tax cuts, Mr. §hreve said “income tax reduction again should bey given first con sideration when Congress reviews its examination of revenue laws.” •---: Boys' Club Plans Party The Trinidad Boys’ Club, in co operation with the District Recrea tion Department, will hold a Hal loween party at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Sherwood playground, Tenth and G streets N.E.
