ME. 3446 CH. 0825 U. S.-British Accord ;On Occupation Costs Expected Next Week By th» Aisociotad Presi The United States and Britain are expected to reach agreement, probably early next week, on an ar rangement by which this country will assume around *250,000,000 of British costs in the western zones of Germany. The agreement is expected also to ; provide that the United States will assume a greater authority in top 1 economic agencies of the Anglo American zones. Officials are em phatic in declaring, however, that this increased voice will not in any way infringe on the basic economic and political partnership which the Western powers have developed there. A__ _ „ J nffininlfi rtfl iuiivi ivuu awu - — —— October 8 began discussing a Brit ish reqi^est for the United States to take over Britain dollar ccets in Germany. The talks were suspend ed last week while several critical questions were referred to the Brit ish cabinet for decision. Agreement Expected Soon. That decision is understood to have been reached, at least in large part, and one highly placed inform ant predicted that the talks would be resumed shortly and agreement reached early next week. The United States, it was learned, already has agreed “in principle" to the British proposal, which was made because the British are short of dollars. Major requirements in the Western German zones are food and other supplies, most of which can be bought only with dollars. Information from diplomatic and official sources gave this picture of the situation as it stands today: The British have been spending about $400,000,000 a year to main tain the civilian economy of their part of the merged British-Amcr tcan zones. Of that amount, $230. 000.000 actually has been spent in dollars and the rest, amounting to $120,000,000, has been spent in pounds sterling. To Buy More With Sterling. During the negotiations here the British are understood to have in dicated that they would be able to buy more of tne supplies required in Germany with pound sterling, the total of the increase being about *70,000,000. This, under the prospec tive new arrangement, would raise the British expenditure in pounds to about *190,000,000 and fix the new total cost to be assumed by the United States for next year at about *210,000,000. In addition, the British asked for relief from some remaining dollar expenditures this year beginning in early October. This reportedly totals about *40,000,000. - Thus the grand total of prospective additional American expenditures in Germany from the present through next year would be approximately *250,000,000._ rota to Digger strips Man JEROME, Idaho (JP).—A potato digging machine stripped David Detweiler of all his clothing, except shoes and sox, but he escaped with minor bruises. Witnesses said Mr. Detweiler was "spun around like a windmill’’ when he became en tangled in the power take-off of the digger, Some Doubt Cast on Report Ot Fatal Crash in China By tht Associated Press PEIPING, Nov. 1.—Some doubt was cast today on a Chinese Com munist relief agency report that Harley Moore, Syracuse, N. Y., and two crewmen were killed in the crash of their China Air Transport Corp., plane October 17. The CACT said it was possible the relief agency might have been reporting on another crash near Shihkiachwang, Central China, per haps that of a Chinese air force plane. CATC noted that the relief agency in its report from Communist-held territory near that city gave the time of the crash as noon, October 17. But Mr. Moore and his r*&ne did not leave Chinkiachwang until 2 p.m. and it maintained radio con tact for 20 minutes. The relief agency messaged that the plane burst into flames after it hit and the bodies were badly burned. They were buried by Com munist militia. Air searchers who first spotted the downed plane said it was intact, but that Communists came back later and burned it. Mr. Moore's mother, Mrs. Hazel Moore, who has lived at the Wash ington Club, 1701 K street N.W., for six months, arrived in Shanghai Tuesday to join her son’s wife. She left Washington a week ago yester day and made the 13,000-mile trip by air.
