Mrs. Harris May Take Stand Monday in Trial On Murder Charge Mrs. Minnie Harris, widow and ac cused slayer of James E. Harris, union official, may take the witness stand in her own defense Monday when her trial on first-degree mur der charges is resumed in District Court. Assistant United States Attorney Arthur J. McLaughlin is expected to complete the prosecution's case against Mrs. Harris shortly after the trial is resumed. Mrs. Harris, who is colored, is :harged in the indictment with mur dering her husband, who was busi ness agent of the Cafeteria and Res taurant Workers’ Union (CIO), as he slept in their home at 3120 Thir teenth street N.W., last April 28. If found guilty, she faces a mandatory death sentence. Handwriting Expert to Testify. The Government’s final witness is expected to be Ira Gulickson, Met ropolitan Police Department hand writing expert, who took several samples of Mrs. Harris’ handwriting, after receipt of a letter mailed from New York to the union head quarters here asserting that the slayer was about to commit suicide. Detective Sergt. Edgar E. Scott of the Homicide Squad, who investi gated the case from April until Mrs. Harris’ arrest in September, was on the stand when Justice Edward M. Curran adjourned court yesterday. The trial was expected to go on to day, but this morning it was re cessed until Monday. Sergt. Scott related to the Jury how he had arrived at the home within two hours after the murder early on April 28 and proceeded to examine all doors and windows for signs of possible entry by force by an outsider. Mrs. Harris has main tained that her husband was killed while she was out of the house for half an hour. Clash With Attorney. Earlier in the day, Detective Sergt. George W. Cook, also of the Homi cide Squad, who had worked on oilier aspects of the case since Its i beginning, engaged in a sharp ex-1 change with Defense Attorney Rob- ] ert I. Miller over police attempts-to find blood on Mrs. Harris’ hands on the day of the murder, Mr. Miller attempted to get from Sergt. Cook testimony that police applied a chemical solution to Mrs. Harris’ hands but found not a single trace of blood of any kind on her skin that day. Sergt. Cook main tained he had been present when the solution was being applied but that he did not know the results of the tests.
