Cheer after cheer greeted the an nouncement In England lately when Britishers were told they could have more potatoes each week. "Good old spuds” they murmured and looked forward to enjoying their favorite vegetable. Though the "earth nut” has had many adventures before it ever reached Ireland, it had a impres sive effect on the economic and social life of the countries it al ready had reached. Contrary to its name, "Irish” the homeland of the potato was the Andean highlands of South Ameri ca. No Indians in North America had ever seen or heard of the po tato when Sir Walter Raleigh ar rived. There is documentary evi dence to prove that the potato made its first appearance in the Virginia colonies from Bermuda in 1621. And the potato reached Bermuda from England and not by way of Spanish American ports. The common potato we all know is Solanum tuberosum and all the species of Solanum found in the wild state are of the New World only. However, the potato we are familiar with today no longer grows wild. There are several wild species of this potato still found in Central and South America and one in Mexico. In Colombia and Ecuador, the Indians called the potato pappas. Pedro Cieza de Leon called it earth nut “whiph could be boiled and was tender as a cooked chestnut, with out more skin than a truffle.” A prayer offered by the Incas to the Creator went: Thou who givest life to all things, and hast made men that may live, and eat, and multiply, multiply also the fruits of the earth, the pappas, and maize that thou hast made, that men may nrtf eiifPar from V»nrtnrar an/I mlc-amr Preserve the fruits of the earth from frost, and keep us in peace and safety.” (Markham.) Italy, apparently took immediately to the spud. France was slow and in Germany, Frederick the Great had to order his subjects to plant fields of potatoes for war needs. China was so conservative she has pre ferred rice and Japan never became excited enough to grow them on a large scale. Spain was slow. Once Ireland got started, the potato be came almost the staff of life; We produced some 400,000,000 bushels in 1046, one-fifth of the Russian quota. We Americans blessed with abundance in so many directions, accept the potato with little or no interest beyond the fact, “mashed potatoes should have gravy or butter.” AUTOMOBILES WANTED (Cont.i. Pass 3 3 0 4Pass Pass 4 4 Dble. Pass Pass Pass ♦ Opening lead, king of hearts. The broad question, “Is it good policy to make the opening lead of a singleton?” is one which the tyro never wearies of asking. It is very much like Inquiring, “Is quinine a good drug?” It depends largely on the nature of the ailment. There are certain specific conditions when the lead of a singleton is apt to prove advantageous. The ideal case includes three factors: (1) Quick control of the trump suit, such as the ace or the king guarded several times. This is to prevent the de clarer from extracting trumps at once and running off with the hand. (2) Some surplus little trumps that would otherwise have no particular value; (3) the reasonable expect ancy of entering partner's hand to I obtain the desired ruff. Where, however, the defender holds at least four trumps, as a general rule ruffs should not be sought and an effort should be made to force declarer's hand to trump by leading the longest and most solid suit. Where the lead of a singleton is indicated it should usually be made at the earliest opportunity. It is much easier for partner to diagnose it as a singleton if it is led at once than if it is shifted to. Failure to lead a singleton at the earliest opportunity' worked out in a. ifranffA manner In hand and permitted declared to make a neat play to prevent a ruff. West opened the king of heart* and re ceived the encouraging nine from, his partner. He promptly shifted to the three of diamonds. This was a clearly marked singleton and it was evident that West intended to ob tain the lead with the ace of trumps and put partner in with a heart to obtain the ruff for the setting trick. Declarer, therefore, looked for a way to prevent East from getting the lead. The method was simpli city itself. Neat but not gaudy. He won the second trick with the Jack of diamonds and led the king of clubs. He was quite sure that West held the ace. On the king of clubs he discarded his remaining heart and West was in, with no way of communication with his partner. Note that if the singleton had been led at the opening there would have been no way for South to break communication between the defenders' hands. (Copyright, 1948, by Ch»rl»» It. Qoren.) Take My Word for It By Frank Colby Cupful-Spoonful Akron: My English teacher says that "cupsful" is wrong. She says It ought to be “cupful." But who ever heard of such a word as “fuls”? —B. A. S. Answer: This usage confuses many people. Let us 6ee Just what it is that cupful means. A cupful is simply the amount of anything that a cup will hold. For example, let us dip a cup into a spring and then pour the water into a pitcher. The pitcher does not now contain a cup full of water, for the cup is empty and is not in the pitcher. The pitcher contains a cup ful of water—the amount of water that will fill a cup. Now let us dip the cup five times more, pouring the water into the pitcher. Obviously the pitcher doesn't contain six cups full of water, for we had but one to begin with, and it is still empty. No: the _.... U.1J. -4.. .1- —3 water, and the six cupfuls equal one pitcherful. In other words cupful is a word like carload. One would never speak of “six carsload of grain," but of six carloads of grain. Likewise, one would speak of six shiploads of food for Europe, six trainloads of coal, etc. In recipes, it is correct to use such plurals as cupfuls, spoonfuls, glass fuls, etc. These plural constructions also are correct: Armfuls of flowers; handfuls of sand; pocketfuls of money; basketfuls of clothes; room fuls of people; lungfuls of air; mouthfuls of food. A thirsty boy pours the cup full of water and drinks. He repeats this act several times. Can we say that he has drunk several cups fuil of water? No; one cannot drink a cup, full or empty. Correctly speak ing, the boy drinks several cupfuls of water or several cups of water. “Six cups full” is correct only when there are actually six cups, and each is full. Do yon hesitate over the use of t.ht words shall-will or shoald-wnuld? Mr. Colby's leaflet, C-4, will explain the proper usage clearly.
