Jennie Tourel Hits 'Easy Money'
As Pitfall to Opera Artistry
The “easy money” waiting around
the corner for singers weighs heavily
against the development of real
artistry, according to Jennie Tourel,
the Metropolitan
Opera singer.
The raven
haired mezzo so
prano who ap
peared in Mo
zart programs at
Dumbarton Oaks
last night and
the night before,
expressed con
cern during an
interview in the
Raleigh Hotel
for the general
caliber of future
singers.
While it Used ToarU.
ta be that the young artist worked
"toward one object—grand opera,”
she said, there are many side ave
nues to quick fame today, such as
the movies, radio and television.
Points to Pitfalls.
“Today, when a great voice is
heard, the artist is not left to him
self,” she went cm. "He is taken up
Immediately by a*parent, a teacher
or a manager for a public appear
ance. What then? He goes on
without the technique that comes
from careful preparation.
“He may fall in a short time. His
voice is ruined. He is frustrated."
One of the pitfalls Miss Tourel
sees is the demand that such a
young artist be “glamoruus”—a re
quirement that forces a feminine
singer, for instance, to spend time
and concentration she may not be
able to afford on dress and fancy
coiffures.
When she passed her own audi
tion in 1933 at the Paris Opera
Comique, she wore a simple street
dress. All anybody was interested
in, she said, was "how I could sing."
“Patience" Is One Word.
The answer, as she sees it, lies
with singers themselves; for the de
mand for great singing is outstrip
ping the supply. In one word, it is
“patience.”
“Don't throw yourself around in
many places,” she said. “Concen
trate on what you want most, and
don’t be diverted by what may come
along in connection with it.”
Miss Tourel is on her third trans
continental tour of the country. She
Is now going to Honolulu, where she
hopes, incidentally, to pursue her
new interest in color photography.
