A Lesson For the Week By William T. Ellis Sprinkled through the days’ news dispatches are the names of Bible places and persons. The west erner who is so fortunate as to travel down the Tigris River from Bagdad to Basra sees on the right bank an imposing tomb, which marks the tra ditional grave of the prophet Ezekiel, and is on certain dates the object of pilgrimage from the multitude of Jews scattered over Iraq and Wm. t. Eiiis. tran, which once were known as Babylonia. War and riot are rampant there today, but nevertheless the homing hearts of the children of the exile turn to this shrine, which symbolizes the life and message of one of the great Old Testament prophets. The exiles of the southern king dom of Judah eventually returned, and dwelt for a time in Canaan. In bitter experience they learned to turn away from the idolatry which had led them astray. After the exile, Jews never returned to idolatry; but have remained a monotheistic people ever since. But they had to be "taught with thorns” the lesson of repentance and reform. In the beginning of the exile of Judah there appeared as a proph et, Ezekiel, whose name means “Jehovah strengthens.” He was a son of a priest and himself a sen sitive spirit who had been given rare personal experiences of God. The simplest explanation of Ezekiel is that he was a God-aflame man, burdened night and day with the sins of his people. Ezekiel was a sensational preach er. He symbolized his message by many object lessons, and many figures of speech, some of which are hard for us to comprehend. Ezekiel was consumed with love for country and for his fellow men, because,he had seen the living God in all of His flaming holiness. His visions gave him power. Scorned! and ridiculed as many another prophet has been. Ezekiel still pro-; claimed the truth he had heard j from God. He portrayed an ulti-1 mate return to the homeland, in consequence of the return to the true worship of the living Lord. • -- The Sunday School Lesson for April 4 is, “A Prophet Among the Exiles”—Ezekiel 1-3; 3.11, 17-21; 4:1-3. (fffrttrrfr of (Ehrigt FORGIVENESS OF SINS: SAUL OF TARSUS No man was a greater enemy'of the Truth than Saul. He was present when young Stephen was stoned to death. Soon after this he was "breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord." But one day, while he was going down to Damascus, he saw Jesus, with whom Saul had a most interesting conversation. The 9th chapter of Acts gives us the scriptural account. But Jesus didn't tell him what to do to have his sins forgiven. He said, "Go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do." Saul was obedient and went on to Damascus—a changed and pentitent man. Later, he was found by Ananias, who told him more about Jesus and then instructed him further in that which he "must do" in order to be saved, namely, "arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord," (Acts 22:16). Saul, thus, had to do the same things all others have had to do in order to obtain forgiveness of sins— and which men today must do in order to have their sins washed away. SILVER SPRING, MD.
