Find Ways to Earn Pin Money
In Spare Time, Says Nancy

“Dear Nancy: I guess I am
pretty young to be having a prob
lem, but it’s about financial af
fairs, Mother thinks she gives
me too much for the amount of
housework I do. I do all I can
for her and she still thinks she
overpays me. Should I try to do
something about it, like getting a
summer job, or just go on and
not pay any attention to what
j she says?’’
It might be good experience for,
you to earn spending money out-;
side your home. You might still
help your mother a bit, and per
haps shell give
| you what she
thinks you de
i serve. A job
; minding chil
dren, or perhaps
working in a
library after
school, might
help you out a
| lot. If you’re
| not old enough
to have a regu
lar part - time
job, there are
lots of little
ways to earn
money during
the summer. You might be able
to do errands for your mother and
the neighbors, take their small
children to the park, or care for
I them at home. These little chores
will not only provide you with pin
: money, but give you some leisure
time in which to spend it.

The only thing you have to tackle
is their jealousy. They may secretly
admire your new hemline, and
wish they could blossom out In
one, too, but because they can’t,

meant to annoy you and make

mind, and would be likely to tell
you the truth. You’re an Individual.
Act like one. If you honestly like
the new style, and know you look
well in it, wear it and watch the
catty remarks dwindle when they
see you don’t mind them. Never,
never, give in to jealousy and
try to pacify it. If you have the
courage of yoiif convictions, stick
to them.

catted and asked me for a date.
I would never go, and last week
they became engaged. 1 was quite
amazed when he called a day ago
and asked me if I’d like to see a
basket ball game that wek end.

that he might better spend his
time with her than calling you.

Whistling While You Work
Helps Make Lips Beautiful

HOLLYWOOD (NANA).—I was
surprised that any one would want
an article by me on beauty hints,
but I had an idea.
The next day at MGM’s studio
school I got all the girls our age
together for a “beauty secret” con
ference. And the best secret* I am
passing on to you!
Instead of using hard metal hair
curlers try using dad’s pipe clean
ers. They are easier to handle—
and much more comfortable to
sleep on!
In order to bring out the natural
luster of the hair, brush it for 15
minutes every day. By lying on the

your teeth morning and night
and after each meal, she tells
girls her own age.

the sldeayou will get twice as much
good from these brushing*.
Braiding the hair will help It grow
by preventing the end* from split
ting. Instead of putting your hair
up every night, braid it, pulling
hard with each twist.
Jane Powell adds cologne to the
last rinsing water used on her
hair. This keeps it fragrant and
sweet-smelling until the next sham
poo.
You might also try mixing co
logne with the water used to sprin
kle down slips and blouses before
ironing.
A natural coloring effect will be
gained by outlining your lips in a
dark lipstick and filling in with a
light shade. Remember, too, that
lipstick should be applied with a
brush. Not with the lipstick itself.
And don’t forget to "blot” your
lips with a tissue at least twice.
This will keep that “painted" look
away.
Whistling is an excellent lip exer- i
else and aids in shaping the mouth. j
You will want to keep your teeth
white and sparkling for an attrac
tive smile. Try brushing them not
only the first thing in the morning
and the last thing at night, but after
each meal.
Brush down on the top teeth and
up on the bottom teeth. On the top
of the teeth, brush straight across.
A girl’s complexion should also be
kept clean and sparkling* Every
night before retiring, I never fail to
scrub my face thoroughly with a
soft complexion brush.
I like to keep sachets with my
lingerie. I have found that lavender
is the only fragrance that is not
definite enough to conflict with anyt
kind of cologne.
You can also keep your clothes
fragrant by making tiny satin bags,
filling them with sachet and at- i
taching one to each of the hangers
in your closet.
When summer comes, you will
want to keep your tan from flaking.
You can do this by massaging baby
oil into the skin after being out In
the sun, and finishing up with a
friction rub, using a large turkish
towel. '
If you don’t have time to go to
the beach or a pool, the rays of the
sun can de reflected to advantage
by sunbathing in your back yard on
a white sheet.
Don’t endanger your skin by tan
ning without a sunburn prevent
ative. I make my own special lotion
by mixing a few drops of Iodine
with a mixture of equal parts of
vinegar and baby oil.

If you know what’s on the social
calendar, you can tote along the
right duds. If you can’t get advance
information, you’ll have to guess.
But don’t take your entire ward
robe. It’s bad form to arrive for a

and hat is the best choice.
Jane will want one or two fresh
blouses and her prettiest afternoon
date dress. Joe needs three clean
shirts and a spare suit, if he’s not
taking a tux.
