, 1Subversive' Group Members Back Assembly Opposing UM T •"V- - (second of a tenet.) By Robert K. Walsh Claiming a 100,000 membership . .. with about 1,000 in Washington, the .. National Youth Assembly Against ^ Universal Military Training Includes sponsors active in such reported <■„, Communist-front organizations as American Youth for Democracy. **» AYD was on the Attorney Gen eral's "subversive list” last Decem ber. The United Negro and Allied Veterans of America, another on the list, has its New York state com mander. Oliver Marten, among the assembly’s 10 original sponsors. "We realize the assembly will be criticized for having sponsors or members affiliated with American 'Youth for Democracy," Mrs. Elsie J Willcox, national executive secretary “"said. “But we will exclude no one. * Our only object is to defeat UMT -‘and the draft. The assembly was organized for that purpose last De cember. We do not believe our campaign will be hurt by having '■people from organizations said to -‘be controlled by Communists.” Communism Is Denied. *. Mrs. Willcox said she is not s Communist. Members of her fam ily have worked for the Socialist ,. Party with Norman Thomas, a foe .-of communism, she explained. Rev. John W. Darr, Jr., New York, chairman of the assembly, has de i nied he is a Communist. He is executive secretary of the '•United Christian Council for De mocracy, described as a co-ordinat "lng group for church youth groups devoted to social welfare. His pre ' decessor, the Rev. Richard Morford, left the council last year to take '■'•a similar position with the National "Council for American-Soviet '"Friendship. That organization was on the Attorney General s list of SI ‘'subversive’’ groups. Testifying in opposition to UMT at Senate committee hearings *.. March 14, Mr. Darr asserted the United States is “interfering” in the Internal affairs of Soviet Rus sia and other nations. “Because the Communists are among the social and political movements working for social change, the policy against Russia and communism has become a war , I against social change and a war for the status quo. American Crisis Seen. “The Soviet Union, with all jus tice, refuses to give up socialism and will not surrended to the self righteous and shameful attempts of the United States to interfere in her internal affairs. * • • It would seem, therefore, that this crisis is not an international crisis at all but an American crisis arising out of the bankruptcy of the bi-partisan poli cies of the Goyernment.” Officials of several Government agencies and congressional commit tees Indicated they have no evi dence that the national chairman and executive secretary of the as sembly are Communists. Those officials, as well as private groups on both sides of the UMT issue, however, agreed the Assembly is a major part of the Communist Party plant to take advantage of, if not lead, the opposition to UMT. National headquarters of the As sembly are in a two-room layout on the second floor of a lower Green wjch Village building occupied by the Cafe Montparnasse at 144 Bleeker street, New York City.
